Ask the Judge 1/15/2008

Rules Tip of the Day: In limited events, all cards that you receive in your limited pool (those in a sealed deck or those you drafted) that are not in your main deck are part of your sideboard.

Q: I understand that creatures with Changeling benefit from effects geared towards creature types such as Kithkin, Merfolk, etc., but would they also get benefits geared towards subtypes such as Soldier, Warrior, and the like?

A: Kithkin, Merfolk, Soldier, and Warrior are all creature subtypes and are treated exactly the same by the game. It does not matter that some creature subtypes are classes and do not describe the race of the creature; they are still creature subtypes. If the word appears after the dash on the type line of a creature or tribal card, it is a creature subtype.

Q: My opponent has two creatures, a Mirror Entity and a Grizzly Bears, and he has eleven mana available. If he uses all his mana at once to activate Mirror Entity, and I respond with Tarfire targeting Mirror Entity and kill it, will the other creature have a power and toughness of 11/11?

A: Yes. Destroying the Mirror Entity will not counter its ability on the stack. All remaining creatures controlled by your opponent will still be affected by Mirror Entity's ability.

Q: If I have Dreamspoiler Witches in play, and I play Humble on my opponent's 2/2 creature during my opponent's turn, can I have the -1/-1 be applied after Humble resolves?

A: No. Dreamspoiler Witch's ability will trigger when you play this Humble and go on the stack on top of it. This triggered ability will resolve first and give the targeted creature -1/-1. Then Humble will resolve and set this creature's power and toughness to 0/1. Both of these two effects are applied in the same layer. Because the Witch's ability resolved first, its timestamp will be earlier than the timestamp of Humble's effect. This means that this creature will remain in play as a 0/1 creature.

Q: I know that with Grave Pact in play, my opponent can just sacrifice the creature I target with my Mogg Fanatic's ability. Does this work the same if I find a way to sacrifice a Mudbutton Torchrunner?

A: No. When you play the Fanatic's ability, you choose a target and sacrifice the Fanatic. Grave Pact's ability will go on the stack on top of this ability, and it will resolve first. Your opponent can choose to sacrifice the creature that has been targeted by the Fanatic's ability before it is dealt a point of damage. In this second example, there are two triggers that go on the stack at the same time when you sacrifice the Mudbutton Torchrunner. You can choose to have Grave Pact go on the stack first, followed by the Mudbutton Torchrunner's ability. Then the Torchrunner's ability will resolve first and deal damage to the targeted creature or player before Grave Pact's ability resolves.

Q: I'm curious as to the interaction between Fervent Charge and Militia's Pride. If I stack Charge then Pride, will the tokens put into play tapped and attacking get +2/+2?

A: No. Abilities that trigger when a creature attacks trigger when the creature is chosen as an attacking creature. Creatures that are put into play attacking will not trigger Fervent Charge's ability.

Q: Can Pentarch Paladin's ability destroy a land?

A: Yes, as long as you can make that land be of the chosen color. Lands are inherently colorless. It does not matter what types they have or what colored mana they are able to generate. But there are effects that can give lands a color.

Q: Clockwork Hydra's ability says "if you do..." Does that mean that I have to take a counter off when I attack or block, and can I take more than one counter off when I attack or block?

A: The phrase 'if you do' is there because it is possible that when this ability resolves you will be unable to remove a counter. When it attacks or blocks, that ability will trigger. When this ability resolves, you remove a counter. However, it is possible that the Hydra will be destroyed after it attacks or blocks but before this ability resolves. Also, you only remove one counter each time this ability resolves; you are not given the option of removing more than one.

Q: Can Retaliate kill a creature with Shroud?

A: Yes. Retaliate does not target anything. It will destroy a creatures that has dealt damage to you, even if it cannot be targeted.

Q: Can I attack with more then one Reckless Ogre and still have them get the +3/+0 bonus?

A: No, as they did not attack by themselves.

Q: Which is faster, Flanking or first strike? Will a 1/2 creature with Flanking kill a 2/1 creature with first strike?

A: Speed is not involved in this; it is a matter of timing. Assuming that the 1/2 creature is attacking and blocked by the 2/1, then the Flanking ability of this attacking creature will trigger. This ability will resolve before the combat damage step. When it does, the blocking creature will receive -1/-1. As this happens before the combat damage step, no combat damage will be dealt.
