Rules Tip of the Day: Once an attacking creature has been legally blocked, it will remain blocked. even if the blocking creature leaves play or the attacking creature gains an evasion ability.
Q: Is there any way to activate the ability of Ashling the Pilgrim and then, before the loss of counters and the damage, sacrifice it with a Brion Stoutarm to have it deal a lot of damage to all creatures in play and my opponent and to gain some life?
A: No. If you sacrifice Ashling the Pilgrim before its ability resolves for the third time in a turn, then that ability will end up doing nothing. Ashling's ability does not deal damage if no counters are removed from it. If you sacrifice it before this ability resolves, then you will not be able to remove any counters. This ability does not use last-known information regarding the number of counters that were on Ashling when it left play.
Q: Does Cairn Wanderer gain "Protection from converted mana cost 3 or greater" if a Mistmeadow Skulk is in the graveyard?
A: Yes. Cairn Wanderer will gain the protection abilities of cards in any graveyard. This includes the more unusual protection abilities like Mistmeadow Skulk's protection from converted mana cost 3 or greater.
Q: If an Oblivion Ring removes an Aura from play, then gets destroyed, what happens to the Aura when it comes back into play? Is it sacrificed? Does it become attached to a legal target of its controller's choice?
A: The Aura will return to play as long as there is a legal object for it to become attached to. It will not become sacrificed. When this Aura returns to play, it does not target, so it can become attached to a legal permanent that cannot be targeted.
Q: If I have a Lovisa Coldeyes and a creature with Changeling in play, would it get +2/+2 for each type it has (+6/+6), or would it only get +2/+2?
A: It will only get +2/+2. Lovissa Coldeye's ability gives +2/+2 to a creature if it is a Warrior, Beserker, or a Barbarian. It does not give +2/+2 to a creature for each of those types that it has.
Q: I play Rootgrapple, and my opponent plays Wild Ricochet on it. If I play Wild Ricochet on his Wild Ricochet, will I be able to make an infinite number of Wild Ricochets, which could all target Rootgrapple and destroy all his lands?
A: No. When your Wild Ricochet resolves, you can choose to change the target of his Wild Ricochet to your Wild Ricochet if you want, or to have it keep its target. If you do choose to have its target changed, then his Wild Ricochet will eventually be countered on resolution. When your Wild Ricochet resolves, you will also put a copy of Wild Ricochet on the stack. You can have this copy Wild Ricochet target his Wild Ricochet or the original Rootgrapple. If you have the copy target his Wild Ricochet, then you are basically back to where this began and will start over from the beginning. You cannot form an infinite loop in this way, as you cannot continually choose to repeat the loop; you must eventually choose to target the Rootgrapple. When you choose to have a copy target the Rootgrapple, then you will end up with two copies of Rootgrapple at the most.
Q: If you sacrifice Dark Depths using Edge of Autumn's Cycling ability with counters still on it, do you get to put an indestructible legendary 20/20 black Avatar creature token with Flying named Marit Lage into play?
A: No. That only happens when Dark Depths has zero counters on it; its ability triggers, and you sacrifice Dark Depths when this triggered ability resolves. You do not get the token creature if you sacrifice Dark Depths in any other way.
Q: Does Splice onto Arcane help with the Storm ability?
A: No, Splicing the text on a card onto an Arcane spell does not count as playing an additional spell. When you play a Spliced spell you are still only playing one spell.
Q: If you control Urza's Incubator and chose Rebels as the type, will that lower the cost of Rebel cards in your deck when using a Rebel search ability like Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero's?
A: No. Effects that lower the cost to play spells only lower what you pay when you play these spells. It does not affect the printed mana cost on card or their converted mana costs.
Q: I play a Reign of Chaos and choose to destroy a blue creature and an Island. My opponent turns his Willbender face up. Can he change the target to another creature, regardless of color? Can he choose a white creature to destroy instead?
A: The answer is no to both questions. Reign of Chaos has been given errata so is it a modal spell. When you play Reign of Chaos, you choose a mode and then choose the two required targets for the chosen mode. Effects that allow a player to change the targets of a spell or ability do not allow that play to change modes. Also, each of the chosen modes has two targets and Willbender's ability can only target spells or abilities with single targets.
