Rules Tip of the Day: When multiple permanents come into play at the same time, the game will check all permanents in play, including those that just came into play, to see if any abilities triggered.
Q: If I have a Tarmogoyf in my graveyard and my Reveillark goes to the graveyard, can I get the Tarmogoyf back? I think it's a 0/1 in the graveyard, but I'm not entirely sure.
A: Tarmogfy's ability that sets its power and toughness applies in all zones. You can get it back with Reveillark's ability as long as there are only two different card types in all graveyards. Keep in mind that the Tarmogofy itself will count as a creature card being in your graveyard.
Q: Can Fodder Launch deal five damage to a planeswalker instead of the controller of the creature targeted by Fodder Launch?
A: Yes; when Fodder Launch resolves, you can choose to have the damage that would be dealt to the controller of the targeted creature be dealt to a planeswalker they control instead.
Q: I have a Maralen of the Mornsong in play. During my opponent's upkeep, I play Shadow of Doubt. What happens?
A: Your opponent will end up losing three life, but will not search for a card. Also, you will not (obviously) draw a card when Shadow of Doubt resolves.
Q: Does Brighthearth Banneret's ability reduce the cost of playing Obsidian Battle-Axe, since it is a Warrior Equipment?
A: Yes. A tribal equipment spell is a spell of the specified creature type. Brighthearth Banneret's ability will lower the cost to play the Obsidian Battle-Axe. Remember that it will not lower the equip cost.
Q: If I have two copies of Grimoire Thief in play, do I need to make separate piles? Or can one of them counter cards removed by the other?
A: The cards removed from the game by an individual Grimoire Thief do need to be kept separate from other piles. All of these cards are in the removed from game zone, but each of them is only 'connected' to the Grimoire Thief that removed it from the game. You cannot use the ability of one Grimoire Thief to counter a spell with the same name as a card that was removed form the game by another Grimoire Thief.
Q: I have an Angelic Voices in play, and one of my oppenents casts Crib Swap on one of my creatures. Is the Angelic Voices then nulled out?
A: Yes. The token put into play when Crib Swap resolves is a colorless creature. It is not white and it is not an artifact creature, so none of your creatures will get +1/+1, until you find a way to get rid of this Changeling creature.
Q: I have five Elves on the table, one being Greatbow Doyen. I play Jagged-Scar Archer, making him a 6/6. Next turn, I activate his ability, targeting an opponent's Galepowder Mage. Does Greatbow Doyen's ability trigger, or does it require actual combat damage to be assigned in the attack phase to trigger?
A: Greatbow Doyen's ability triggers when an Archer deals any damage, not just combat damage. In this example, your opponent will end up receiving six points of damage.
Q: If I have a Gilt-Leaf Archdruid in play and I play a Treefolk Harbinger, will the Harbinger's ability trigger first, allowing me to place another Harbinger on top of my library and then immediately draw it?
A: No. Gilt-Leaf Archdruid's ability triggers when when you play a Druid spell. This triggered ability will go on the stack on top of the Druid spell, and will resolve first. In other words, you will draw a card before the Treefolk Harbinger comes into play and its ability triggers.
Q: How does the storm mechanic work with Rule of Law in play? If I play a spell, and then my opponent plays a spell with storm that turn, will the storm mechanic put another copy of the spell onto the stack?
A: Yes. The storm copies are not played; they are put on the stack when the storm triggered ability resolves. Rule of Law will not prevent this. However, because it does limit each player to only playing a single spell each turn, it will keep the storm count low.
Q: If I put a Death Watch on my opponent's Serra Avatar and then Terror the Avatar, does my opponent lose the game?
A: Yes. When Death Watch's triggered ability resolves, your opponent will be dealt damage equal to their life total, so they will end up losing the game.
