Ask the Judge, 2/18/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: No player receives priority in the untap step. Some effects require players to makes choices as to what to untap or what not to untap, but you can't play spells or abilities during this step.
Q: My opponent has a Taurean Mauler in play and I play Pyroclasm. Does the Mauler get a counter before Pyroclasm resoves?
A: Yes. When you play Pyroclasm, Taurean Mauler's ability triggers and goes on the stack on top of the Pyroclasm. This triggered ability will resolve first and give the Mauler a +1/+1 counter before the Pyroclasm resolves.
Q: If I have a Reveillark and a Mulldrifter in play, and I play Wrath of God, can I return that Mulldrifter to play using Reveillark's leaves-play ability, or does that ability trigger before both creatures hit the graveyard?
A: When Reveillark's triggered ability goes on the stack, the Mulldrifter is in your graveyard, and it can be targeted by this ability.
Q: I have a Mutavault (played last turn) and an Obsidian Battle-Axe in play. If I animate the Mutavault, can I use the Battle-Axe's ability to attach it for free?
A: No; this Mutavault did not enter play, so the trigger condition is not met. It was already in play when it became a creature with all types. The ability of the Obsidian Battle-Axe will not trigger.
Q: Playing casually against a Merfolk Grind deck, my opponent had two copies of Merrow Commerce, a Drowner of Secrets and numerous other Merfolk. At the end of his turn, he wanted to untap his Merfolk with one copy of Merrow Commerce, activate Drowner of Secrets a bunch of times, and then untap them all again with the second Merrow Commerce. The way I see it, end of turn means... end of turn. By the time the Merrow Commerce resolves, we hit cleanup, and he can't tap and then untap again.
A: What your opponent did was correct. At the beginning of the end of turn step, both abilities triggered and went on the stack. Between each resolution, both players can play other spells and abilities. So after the first one resolves and untaps his Merfolk, he can tap them all to activate the ability of his Drowner, and then untap them all again when the ability of the other Merrow Commerce resolves.
Q: My opponent plays a Changeling. Can I attach one of the Morningtide equipments to it? The rules say that the equip ability can only be used on creatures you control, but the Morningtide equipment all have triggered abilities, and the 'you control' phrase is nowhere to be found.
A: Yes, you can attach this equipment to this Changeling. The equip ability can only target a creature you control, but that does not mean that equipment you control cannot become attached to a creature you do not control via other means. The triggered ability of the equipment from Morningtide is one of the ways that you can cause equipment you control to become attached to a creature that you do not.
Q: Can I use Vedalken Mastermind's ability with Sower of Temptation to permanently take control of my opponent's creature?
A: No. Sower of Temptation's ability has a duration that lasts as long as the Sower remains in play. If it is not in play when the ability would start to be applied, then nothing will happen.
Q: I have a Timbermare and a Mosswort Bridge in play. Can I evoke Briarhorn targeting the Timbermare (making it an 8/8), and before I have to sac Briarhorn, use the Mosswort's ability to play the card removed by its hideaway ability, since I now have creatures with power 10 or greater in play? Or does the Briarhorn's ability happen instantly, preventing me from playing any spells or abilities before it dies?
A: When Briarhorn comes into play, you'll have two triggered abilities that go on the stack: one that gives a targeted creature +3/+3, and another that makes you sacrifice Briarhorn. As the controller of these two abilities you can determine the order that they go on the stack. To get the result you want, you'll need to put the evoke sacrifice trigger on the stack first, followed by the Briarhorn's comes-into-play ability. After the top trigger resolves, you will control creatures with power of 10 or more. You can activate the ability of your Mosswort Bridge at this time, before you have to sacrifice the Briarhorn.
Q: There is a Pandemonium in play and a Thornweald Archer is played. That creature's controller chooses my Tarmogoyf as the target for the Pandemonium damage. Does deathtouch apply to this damage?
A: Yes, it does. Pandemonium causes the creature that just came into play to deal damage equal to its power to a targeted creature or player. As Thornweald Archer is the source of this damage, its deathtouch ability will trigger.
Q: If I discard Krosan Reclamation as an additional cost to my Insidious Dreams, may I flashback the Reclamation with Insidious Dreams on the stack?
A: Yes. You discard cards as an additional cost to play Insidious Dreams. As Krosan Reclamation is an instant and has Flashback, you can then play the one you just discarded when you played Insidious Dreams. This will then allow you to search for the cards from your graveyard that you shuffled back into your library and put them on top of your library.
