Ask the Judge, 2/21/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: Some spells and abilities, like Misdirection or the morph trigger of Willbender, can change the target of another spell or ability. You do not choose the new version of the target until the Misdirection-like spell or ability resolves.
Q: In order to play Auntie's Snitch for its prowl cost, do I have to play it immediately when the combat damage is dealt, or can I play it during my second main phase?
A: You can only play it for its prowl cost when you could normally play it. In order to take advantage of its prowl cost you'd need to play it during the second main phase of your turn. Prowl only changes what you pay; it does not change when you can play the prowl card.
Q: I reveal the top card of my library with Leaf-Crowned Elder and it is a Chameleon Colossus. Since the Colossus says it has "every creature type at all times," does that mean I can play the Colossus without paying the casting cost, or does the "every creature type at all times" ability of the Colossus not apply until the Colossus hits the stack?
A: Changeling is a characteristic-defining ability, and it applies at all times. This means that when it is revealed for Leaf-Crowned Elder's ability, you can reveal it and put it into play.
Q: If I control two copies of Cenn's Tactician, and I have a creature with a +1/+1 counter, how many creatures can it block?
A: The ability of Cenn's Tactician you are referring to is cumulative. This means that for each Cenn's Tactician you control, each creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it can block an additional creature. With two Cenn's Tactician in play, a creature with a +1/+1 counter on it can block up to three creatures.
Q: I have a Pithing Needle in play set to Obsidian Battle-Axe. I realize that my opponent cannot pay 3 to equip it. But will Needle prevent the "free" equip that is possible if my opponent plays a Warrior?
A: No. Your Pithing Needle may prevent the Battle-Axe's equip ability from being used, but it will not prevent its other ability from triggering when a Warrior enters play.
Q: I have Garruk Wildspeaker in play with five loyalty counters. My opponent plays Profane Command with X=5 and chooses the return-a-creature and loss-of-life modesi, targeting a Shriekmaw in his graveyard and me. As the Profane Command resolves, can he then choose to redirect that loss of life to my plainswalker?
A: No. Loss of life cannot be redirected to planeswalkers, only damage.
Q: My Oona's Prowler has a Cloak and Dagger on it. Is Oona's Prowler now no longer targetable by its own ability?
A: Oona's Prowler's ability does not target anything. Any player can play that ability, even if Oona's Prowler has Shroud.
Q: I have a Mist Dragon and a Ceaseless Searblades in play. I give the Dragon all creature types with Blades of Velis Vel. When I activate the "gains flying" or "loses flying" abilities of Mist Dragon, does my Searblades get +1/+0?
A: Yes. Ceasless Searblades' ability triggers any time the activated ability of an Elemental is used. It does not matter if this creature is 'naturally' an Elemental, or is only one because of an effect.
Q: My friend has two copies of Storage Matrix in play. Can I choose two of the three types of permanents to untap?
A: Yes, you can choose two different permanent types, but if you do, then nothing will untap. The ability from a single Storage Matrix prevents all permanents from untapping except those of the chosen type associated with that Storage Matrix. If there are two Storage Matrixes in play, then you will have two choices to make. But if you choose two different types then each Matrix will prevent the other's chosen permanents from untapping. In other words, it is in your best interest to choose the same type with regards to each Storage Matrix ability.
Q: Reset is imprinted onto Isochron Scepter. Will the Scepter's controller be able to play the copy of Reset on his own turn?
A: No. They can play and resolve Isochron Scepter's ability, but they cannot play the copy of Reset made at that time. Reset's inherent restriction on when it can be played still applies to any copies made by Isochron Scepter.
