Ask the Judge, 2/25/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: Effects that have you draw multiple cards are treated as reading 'Draw a card' repeatedly. For example 'Draw 3 cards' is treated as 'Draw a card, draw a card, draw a card.' This is because the act of drawing a card in Magic is defined as taking a single card from the top of a library and putting it into your hand.
Q: If I have a landwalker and my opponent has the relevant type of land, does the unblockability apply only to my opponent, or does it apply to my opponent and my opponent's planeswalkers as well?
A: Your creature will still be unblockable, even if it is attacking a planeswalker controlled by that player. Attacking creatures with a landwalk ability are unblockable if the defending player controls a land of the appropriate type. Even if you attack a planeswalker, your opponent is still the defending player.
Q: Would I be able to use Noggin Whack on an opponent with less than three cards in his hand?
A: Yes. If the player that you targeted does not have three cards in his hand, he will have to do as much as possible, and will end up revealing his entire hand. You'll then choose all of these revealed cards and this player will end up discarding them.
Q: I have a Hamletback Goliath and a Sunrise Sovereign in play. The Goliath is an 8/8 because of the Sovereign, and has received no counters yet. I play a Blindspot Giant, which is a 4/3. Does the Goliath gets four counters or six, because of the Sovereign?
A: When another creature comes into play, Hamletback Goliath's ability will trigger and go on the stack. This ability checks the power of the creature that came into play as the ability resolves. In this example, the power of the Blindspot Giant will be six, so the Goliath will gain six +1/+1 counters.
Q: I have a Timber Protector and a Cloudcrown Oak in play. An opponent attacks with a 3/3, and I block with Cloudcrown Oak. After combat, he plays a spell to give my Cloudcrown Oak -2/-2. Would this kill my Cloudcrown Oak, or would it still live, due to Timber Protector's constant effect?
A: At this point, your Clowdcrown Oak is a 1/2 creature with three points of damage on it. It would normally be destroyed, since it has taken lethal damage, but the Timber Protector in play makes the Oak indestructible, so it will remain in play.
Q: My only land in play is a Dreadship Reef with one storage counter. I play Clockspinning targeting Dreadship Reef. To pay the casting cost of Clockspinning, I tap Dreadship Reef to get a colorless mana, and use it to play Dreadship Reef's ability, removing the counter and getting the desired blue mana. How does Clockspinning resolve? Does it add the storage counter on Dreadship Reef or does it do nothing at all?
A: Clockspinning will resolves, as its target is still legal. However, when it does resolve, you cannot choose a counter on this Dreadship Reef, so nothing will happen. So no, you will not put a storage counter on the Reef.
Q: If I have both Burgeoning and Limited Resources in play, can I play lands using Burgeoning's ability without being affect by Limited Resources' restrictions? In other words, if my opponent plays the 10th land on the table, can I use Burgeoning to play the 11th land?
A: Yes, that works. Burgeoning allows you to put a land card in your hand into play; you do not play this land.
Q: I have three dual lands, covering all basic land types, and a Wild Mongrel. I have four random cards in hand, plus a Coalition Victory. If I activate Wild Mongrel's ability, cycling through each color, and play the Coalition Victory, will I win the game?
A: No. Wild Mongrel will only be one color when Coalition Victory resolves. Using just its own ability, it cannot be all five colors at one time.
Q: I have a non-creature artifact enchanted with Animate Artifact, and I play Flickerform on it. I activate Flickerform's ability. When the artifact returns to play, do both Animate Artifact and Flickerform return at the same time?
A: They try to. However, the Flickerform cannot return to play, as this object that is returned to play is not a creature. Because the Flickerform cannot be attached to this non-creature artifact, it will remain removed from the game.
Q: Three players are in a multi-player game. One has Void Maw, one has Kumano, Master Yamabushi, and the third player has a 1/1 creature. Kumano, Master Yamabushi kills the 1/1 creature with its activated ability. Is the 1/1 creature removed from the game by Void Maw, by Kumano, Master Yamabushi, or is there some sort of priority (or choice) to select which of the two cards will remove the creature?
A: The controller of the 1/1 creature will choose which effect will remove it from the game. When it is dealt lethal damage, the replacement effect created by Kumano's activated ability and the replacement effect from Void Maw's static ability will both attempt to remove this creature from the game. Whenever two or more replacement effects can be applied to a single event, the affected player or controller of the affected object chooses to apply one first and then the other if it is still applicable. In this example, once one of these effects removes this 1/1 creature from the game, the other effect will not be applicable any longer.
