Ask the Judge, 2/26/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: You can identify a triggered ability by the use of the words 'When,' 'Whenever,' and 'At.' Those words often appear at the beginning of the triggered ability, but not always.
Q: I have a Reveillark in my hand, a Preeminent Captain and a Wizened Cenn in my graveyard, and a Crusade in play. Can I evoke the Reveillark and return the Preeminent Captain and Wizened Cenn to play?
A: Yes. Reveilark's ability only cares about the characteristic of the cards in the graveyard, not the characteristics of the permanent that this card will represent when it enters play.
Q: I have a question about the interaction between Leaf-Crowned Elder and Rule of Law. If the kinship ability triggers, and you put that creature or tribal spell into play at no cost, will that count as your one spell per turn?
A: Yes. If the top card of your library shares a creature subtype with Leaf-Crowned Elder, then you can reveal it and play it. You do not put it into play. Because you are playing it, it can be countered. With Rule of Law in play, it will count as your one spell played that turn.
Q: If one of my opponents was dealt seven damage on their turn, and I have a Pyromancer's Swath underneath a Spinerock Knoll, and at the end of their turn, I activate the Knoll to play the Pyromancer's Swath, do I have to discard at this point, or would that effect not trigger until my end of turn step?
A: If the Pyromancer's Swath enters play in the end of turn step, then its ability will not trigger. You will not have to discard your hand until the next end of turn step, when its ability will trigger.
Q: Player has no creatures in play on his turn. He plays Whitemane Lion, and in response, he evokes Inner-Flame Acolyte. Is the Acolyte able to target the Lion and the Lion able to target the Acolyte when they resolve, giving the Whitemane Lion +2/+0 and haste, and bouncing the Inner-Flame Acolyte?
A: No. In fact what you have described is not a legal play. You can only evoke a creature when you can play it. You cannot respond to the Whitemane Lion's comes-into-play trigger by playing the Acolyte via evoke.
Q: Can I use Angel's Grace to save myself from Illusions of Grandeur? I know I can save myself temporarily, because I can't lose for the turn, but do I still get reduced to one life, or will I die at the beginning of the next turn?
A: Angel's Grace will prevent you from losing the game, but only for this turn. When Illusions of Grandeur leaves play you lose life; you do not take damage. Angel's Grace affects what damage does to your life total, not what loss of life does to your life total.
Q: My opponent has a Saltcrusted Steppe] with five counters on it. If he pays 1 and removes five counters from the Steppe to add five mana to his pool, can I counter the addition of that mana with Trickbind?
A: No. That ability is a mana ability. Mana abilities do not use the stack and cannot be responded to. (Trickbind's reminder text also points out that mana abilities cannot be targeted.)
Q: I have Future Sight in play and Predict on the top of my library. If I play Predict, is the top card of my library revealed before I have to choose the target for Predict?
A: No. When playing the top card of your library, with a card like Future Sight in play, you do not reveal the new top card until after you have completed the announcement of the first spell. Because you choose all targets of a spell during the announcement process, you will not know what the top card of your library is when you choose a target player.
Q: Player A has 12 life. Player B plays Shock on player A, and player A plays Mending Hands in response. After Mending Hands resolves, player B plays Urza's Rage, with kicker. Will the damage prevention try to use itself up on the Urza's Rage, or will it wait and apply itself to Shock?
A: These prevention 'shields' will wait and prevent the damage from the Shock. If damage cannot be prevented, the damage prevention shields will not be used up, and will wait around until they can actually prevent damage.
Q: Can Beloved Chaplain be enchanted by a Licid? Is the phrase "Attach it to target creature" part of the targeting requirement or part of the effect?
A: Yes, a Licid can become attached to a Beloved Chaplain, but only if the Licid is an Aura and is moved to the Chaplain. It cannot be targeted by a Licid ability when the Licid is a creature. The phrase of the Licid ability you point out is both a targeting requirement and part of the effect. You choose all targets when you play the ability, so you must choose a target creature when this ability is played. When the ability resolves, the Licid will turn into a Aura and then become attached to this creature.
Q: Can I tap a Mistform Warchief to make it a Goblin Beast Zombie Wizard Soldier?
A: No. When you choose creature type, you must choose a single type.
