Ask the Judge, 3/6/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: In tournament play, players are allowed to take notes and use those notes within a match. They are expected to take these notes in a 'timely manner' and cannot use notes from outside the current match. Players are not allowed to take notes during a draft.
Q: I have a question regarding Oona's Blackguard's combat-damage triggered ability. Do non-Rogue creatures that I control that have +1/+1 counters on them get the ability?
A: Yes, that ability applies to all creatures that you control that have a +1/+1 counter on them, and not just those Rogues that came into play and were given +1/+1 counters by the Blackguard's other ability.
Q: Does Scion of Oona gives Bitterblossom shroud?
A: Yes. Scion of Oona's ability grants Shroud to all permanents you control with the creature subtype of Faerie, even those that are not creatures.
Q: My opponent was playing a deck where he used Memnarch to turn his Jace Beleren into an artifact. He then said that—since it was now an artifact—he could activate the abilites as many times as he wanted per turn, because they are now considered artifact abilities. He then milled me until my libraries was empty, and forced me to draw a card. Was this a legal play?
A: No. This Jace Beleren is currently an artifact, but it is still a planeswalker, and he can only play one of its abilities during each of his turns.
Q: If there are multiple copies of Prowess of the Fair in play, and one is destroyed, I understand that it will trigger the other, since it's an Elf permanent leaving play. Will this work with Tribal - Elf cards, like Hunting Triad or Gilt-Leaf Ambush?
A: No. Hunting Triad and Gilt-Leaf Ambush are spell cards; they are never permanents in play. Prowess of the Fair's ability only triggers when a non-token Elf permanent in play goes to the graveyard.
Q: I have Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker in play. I play a Mulldrifter for its evoke cost. Can I tap Kiki-Jiki to make a copy of the Mulldrifter before the Mulldrifter goes to the graveyard?
A: Yes. You can respond to the evoke triggered ability that causes you to sacrifice the evoked creature. And because the evoke cost was not paid for this copy, you will not have to sacrifice it.
Q: I have a Darksteel Citadel and a Mountain in play, and a Boom / Bust in my hand, while my opponent has a Battlefield Forge in play. During my turn, I play Boom. When the Boom spell resolves, I have to destroy one of my lands and one of my opponent's. Can I target my Citadel (and retain it) so I can destroy my opponent's Battlefield Forge via Boom?
A: Yes, that works. Darksteel Citadel cannot be destroyed, but that does not mean that it cannot be targeted by spells and abilities that would attempt to destroy it. Keep in mind that you choose all targets of a spell when it is played, not when it resolves.
Q: How does Char-Rumbler interact with Pandemonium? Specifically, can I target myself and gain life?
A: No. When Pandemonium's ability resolves, it will look at the current power of the creature that entered play and triggered its ability. If this creature has a power below zero, then the game will see it has having a power of zero. In this example, you will be dealt zero damage; you will not gain life. The game does not allow for negative damage to be dealt.
Q: I have two copies of Stampeding Serow in play at the beginning of my upkeep. Can I return one of them to my hand to keep the other in play?
A: Not if these are the only two green creatures you control. At the beginning of your upkeep, the ability of each Serow will trigger. When each of these abilities resolves, you will have to return a green creature you control to your hand. You can't just return one green creature to your hand to satisify both triggered abilities or negate the ability of the Serow you returned.
Q: I have in play an Ashnod's Transmogrant and a Covetous Dragon. When I activate Ashnod's Transmogrant's ability to make Covetous Dragon a 7/6 flying artifact creature, is there ever a point where no other artifacts are in play before the dragon itself becomes an artifact? Basically, would I lose my Dragon that way?
A: Yes. After you activate the ability of Ashnod's Transmogrant and target your Covetous Dragon, the ability will be on the stack waiting to resolve, but you will not control any artifacts. Because of this, the Dragon's state-triggered ability will trigger and go on the stack on top of the Transmogrant ability. This trigger will resolve first and cause you to sacrifice the Dragon before the Transmogrant's ability resolves. When the Transmogrant's ability attempts to resolve, it will be countered on resolution, as its target is no longer legal.
