Ask the Judge, 3/17/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: All cards and permanents have a converted mana cost. Tokens and lands do not have a mana cost in the upper right corner, so they have a converted mana cost of zero, unless otherwise noted.
Q: I have only a Kinsbaile Skirmisher in play and a Weight of Conscience enchanting an enemy creature. I play Thoughweft Trio. Can I tap the two Kithkins before I champion one of them?
A: Yes, this works, because the champion ability uses the stack. When the Thoughtweft Trio spell resolves and the Trio enters play, its champion ability will trigger and go on the stack. At this point, you can tap both the Trio and your Skirmisher to pay the activation cost of your Weight of Conscience to remove the enchanted creature from the game. Then the champion ability will resolve, and you can either remove the Skirmisher from the game or sacrifice the Trio.
Q: During my opponent's draw step, I play Vendilion Clique. When the comes-into-play ability resolves, I look at his hand, which includes an Incinerate. I choose it; can he play that Incinerate 'in response'?
A: No. You choose a card and your opponent discards it when Vendilion Clique's ability resolves. No play will receive priority while this is happening. In order to play the Incinerate, your opponent would have had to respond to the Vendilion Clique's comes-into-play ability and played the Incinerate before the ability resolved.
Q: Is Oona's Blackguard's discarding ability cumulative? If I have three Oona's Blackguards in play, and I swing at my opponent with an Oona's Prowler with a counter, will my opponent be discarding three cards, or only one?
A: Any time a creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it deals combat damage to a player, the abilities of each Oona's Blackguard you control will trigger independently and resolve separately. As each of these abilities resolves, the damaged player will discard a card. So if you control three Blackguards, the damaged player will end up discarding three cards.
Q: Can Obsidian Battle-Axe be equipped to any creature, or can it only be equipped to Warriors?
A: It can be equipped to a creature with any creature type, not just Warriors.
Q: Is Cairn Wanderer's ability-granting ability a characteristic-defining ability? For example, if I have an Oona's Blackguard in my graveyard, can I search my library for Cairn Wanderer with Isperia the Inscrutable?
A: No, that ability is a static ability that only applies while the Wanderer is in play. When not in play, the Wanderer will not have any of the abilities that it can have when in play.
Q: I have Pyromancer's Swath in play, and I play Drain Life. Do I gain life equal to the spell's damage plus two?
A: Yes. The amount of damage dealt by Drain life will be X+2, so you will gain that much life, as long as that amount is not greater than the toughness of the targeted creature or life total of the targeted player. It does not matter that you did not spend X+2 black mana.
Q: Is Azorius First-Wing affected by Stasis? Will it be able to untap during the untap step?
A: Yes, it will be affected. Stasis does not deal damage; it is not a local enchantment or piece of equipment; it has nothing to do with creature combat; and it does not target. Because of this, protection from enchantments will not prevent a creature from being affected by Stasis's ability. So the First-Wing will not untap.
Q: Am I only allowed to give Junkyo Bell's +X/+X bonus to one creature each upkeep? Or if I had six creatures out, could I give them all +6/+6 and then sacrifice them all at the end of my turn?
A: You can only give this bonus to one creature you control. The ability triggers once at the beginning of your upkeep. When this trigger goes on the stack you can only choose one creature.
Q: If I attack an opponent with a bunch of en-Kors and a Fangren Firstborn, can I withdraw the Firstborn with Reconnaissance (so it "neither deals nor receives combat damage this turn"), then redirect any damage dealt by blockers to the Kors to it, saving everything and still getting a bunch of damage in and +1/+1 counters on all of my creatures?
A: Yes, that works. When you attack, Fangren Firstborn's ability will trigger and go on the stack. After this ability resolves, you can remove the Firstborn from combat using Reconnaissance's ability. If you do, any combat damage it would deal and any that would be dealt to it will be prevented. This includes any combat damage that would be redirected to it via an en-Kor ability.
