Ask the Judge, 4/8/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: When an existing permanent becomes a copy of another permanent, it does not count as that permanent coming into play. Abilities that trigger when a permanent comes into play will not trigger when this happens.
Q: I use Soulbright Flamekin's ability three times and gain eight red mana. I then Momentary Blink the Flamekin. If I use his ability three more times, will I get another eight mana?
A: Yes. This Soulbright Flamekin in play is a new and different permanent. It does not matter that it is represented by a card that was previously in play. You can repeat the process where you play and resolve the activated ability of this new Flamekin three times in order to get more mana.
Q: I play a Boldwyr Heavyweights, and my friend searches his deck and gets an Aethersnipe. Can he target the Boldwyr Heavyweights with the Aethersnipe's comes-into-play trigger?
A: Yes. When the Boldwyr Heavyweights enters play, its ability will trigger. When this trigger resolves, each of your opponents can search their library for a creature card and put it into play. Any abilities that trigger on these creatures entering play, like Aethersnipe's ability, will trigger. These abilities will go on the stack after the Heavyweights ability has completely resolved. At this point, the Heavyweights is in play, so it can be targeted by these abilities.
Q: If I play a Vendilion Clique targeting myself, and my hand has only land in it, or is empty, will I still draw a card?
A: No. If you cannot choose a nonland card in the hand of the targeted player, then none of the rest of the ability will occur. You cannot use this ability in this way to just draw a card,
Q: How does Mirror Gallery interact with planeswalkers?
A: It does not; planeswalkers are not legendary. The 'Legend Rule' is not what causes planesalkers with the same type to go to the graveyard. The state-based effect that causes this is similar, but not the same.
Q: Can Blades of Velis Vel target the same creature two times?
A: No, it specifically states 'up to two target creatures'. This means that you can choose one or two creatures, but each will only get +2/+0. If you target one creature, it will not get +4/+0.
Q: If I have a Thrumming Stone out and play a Boggart Harbinger, the Harbinger allows me to find another Goblin card and put it on top of my library. Can I retrive another Boggart Harbinger from my library, put it on the top of my deck, ripple 4 to put the Boggart Harbinger into play, retrive another one from my deck to put on the top of my library to ripple again, until I've put allthe Boggart Harbingers in my library into play?
A: No, that does not work. Ripple triggers when you play a spell with ripple. In this situation, the ripple ability of the first Boggart Harbinger will trigger and resolve before the Harbinger enters play. You do not search for a Goblin card and put it on top of your library until the Harbinger's comes-into-play ability resolves, so you can not set up your library to take advantage of the ripple ability in the manner you describe.
Q: Can I play Reins of Power during the combat phase to prevent my opponent's weenie horde from attacking me?
A: Sort of. You can play Reins of Power after attackers are declared. If you do, then all creatures in combat will be removed from combat. You are not so much preventing creatures from attacking you as removing all creatures from combat after they have attacked you.
Q: The only lands I have in play are Darksteel Citadels, and I control a Demonic Hordes. Since I can't pay the upkeep, can the Hordes make me lose the Citadels?
A: Yes. The Hordes' upkeep triggered ability has you pay BBB or sacrifice a land, not destroy a land you control. Indestructible permanents can be sacrificed.
Q: I have a Furnace of Rath out and play Pyrokinesis. Is that eight damage that I can divide eight different ways or only four different ways?
A: When you play Pyrokinesis, you can divide up to four points of damage amongst up to four different targets. Then, when this damage would dealt, it is doubled. The fact that this damage will be dealt when it is applied does not mean that you can assign twice as much damage.
Q: I have a question about sideboarding and shuffling. If I have a transformational sideboard, and I put my whole sideboard into my deck and shuffle it without removing fifteen cards, can my opponent call a judge and have the judge deck check me? In other words, do I have to remove fifteen cards before I can shuffle?
A: No. All that matters is that you eventually present a legal and randomized deck. Your opponent cannot really call a judge over before you present your deck. Keep in mind that in order to do that, you will have to shuffle your deck again after you remove fifteen cards, in order to randomize the deck again.
