Chris Richter

Rules Tip of the Day: When combat damage is assigned, if all of the creatures that were blocking an attacking creature with trample are no longer in play, then all of the damage from the attacking creature with trample will be assigned to the defending player.

Q: If I have a Ravenous Rats in play and I play Scarscale Ritual, putting the -1/-1 counter on the Rats in order to pay for it, can I play Curfew to return the Rats to my hand before it heads to the graveyard?

A: No. You put a -1/-1 counter on a creature you control as an additional cost to play Scarscale Ritual. Immediately after you play it, state-based effects are checked. At this point, the Ravenous Rats that you put the -1/-1 counter on will be a 0/0 creature and go to the graveyard. This will happen before you can play Curfew, and long before it resolves and you return a creature you control to your hand.

Q:If I use the ability of Inkfathom Witch before blockers are declared, will any creatures have their power and toughness modified?

A: No, because attacking creatures are neither blocked nor unblocked before blockers are declared. That ability can only be used after blockers have been declared.

Q: I'd like to know what happens if I have a Cemetery Puca in play, and someone destroys a Demigod of Revenge I control and I decide to pay one mana to make a copy of the Demigod.

A: The Puca will become a copy of the Demigod. However, the Demigod's ability triggers when you play it as a spell, so this ability of the Puca copy will not trigger.

Q: I have a Leech Bonder in play with two -1/-1 counters on it. What happens to the -1/-1 counters when Godhead of Awe comes into play? Will there still be two counters on Leech Bonder?

A: Yes, but not for long, as the Leech Bonder will go to the graveyard and those counters will cease to exist. The effect from these counters is applied after Godhead of Awe's power- and toughness-setting ability, so the Leech Bonder will end up as a -1/-1 creature and go to the graveyard.

Q: I have a Chronozoa in play and I use Fate Transfer to transfer the vanishing counters to another creature. Would that creature gain vanishing because of the vanishing counters?

A: No. The counters on the Chronozoa are time counters, not vanishing counters. There are no abilities associated with the counters; they are used as an accounting measure.

Q: Can Cairn Wanderer get other abilities that are not listed on the card, such as defender, indestructible, etc.?

A: No. it can only gain the abilities that are listed on the card.

Q: It is my pre-combat main phase. My opponent has a Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir in play. I sacrifice my Windswept Heath and attempt to play Panglacial Wurm from my library. He says I can't, because of Teferi's time restrictions. I believe Panglacial Wurm ignores time restrictions. Am I correct?

A: No. In this example, we have two abilities that contradict each other. The Wurm's ability states that you can play the Wurm at a particular time, and Teferi's ability says that you cannot. Whenever two effects contradict each other, the one that says that something can't happen wins.

Q: I have Mycosynth Lattice in play and I play Tinker. Can I search for a creature card that isn't an artifact at the time and put it into play?

A: No. Mycosynth Lattice makes all cards colorless, but it does not make them into artifacts. This creature card in your library is not an artifact card, so you will not be able to use Tinker to search for it.

Q: Can Hungry Hungry Heifer's ability can be used on suspended cards? Do players actually control suspended cards, and if so, do they count as "cards"?

A: You can own cards in the removed from game zone, but you do not control them. So, no you cannot remove a time counter from a suspended card with Hungry Hungry Heifer.
