Ask the Judge, 5/21/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: Giving a creature first strike after first strike damage has already gone on the stack will not prevent it from dealing combat damage.
Q: Does wither work on a creature that has shroud, or does it do normal damage?
A: Wither does not target; a creature that cannot be targeted will receive -1/-1 counters from a source that has wither.
Q: I have Safehold Duo, and I play Mercy Killing and sacrifice a 8/8 creature. Eight green and white Elf tokens come into play. Will my Safehold Duo get +8/+8 and vigilance?
A: No. You played one green and white spell in this example: the Mercy Killing. Safehold Duo's abilities triggers when spells of the appropriate colors are played, not when permanents of those colors come into play. The Duo will only get +1/+1 and vigilance until the end of turn.
Q: What happens when I use Makeshift Mannequin on Tatterkite?
A: It will come into play without a mannequin counter. Because it does not have this counter, it will not have the ability that triggers whenever it is targeted.
Q: I have a Grim Poppet in play that is about to be destroyed. If I activate Cauldron of Souls, what happens? When it comes back into play with -1/-1 counter from persist, will I be able to use its ability to move the -1/-1 counter to another creature before it gets three -1/-1 counters of the Grim Poppet? Do any of the abilities that give the Poppet -1/-1 counter use the stack?
A: It will come back into play, but as a 0/0 creature. Before you'll get the chance to play any spells or abilities, state-based effects will be checked. At this time, the Poppet will go to the graveyard. Neither the portion of the persist effect that gives the Poppet a -1/-1 counter nor the Poppet's own ability that gives it -1/-1 counters use the stack. So you will not be able to move any of these counters to another creature.
Q: I was wondering how Godhead of Awe interacts with other creatures that give +1/+1 to creatures, like Wilt-Leaf Liege? I'm not sure if the creatures are 1/1s or 2/2s.
A: The effects from the static abilities of the Leige are applied after the power- and toughness-setting effect from Godhead of Awe, so creatures you control with the appropriate colors in play will get the +1/+1 bonus from the Liege.
Q: If you have two Resplendent Mentors in play, do you get two life when you tap a white creature or just one?
A: Each white creature you have will have the ability to tap and gain a life twice. You can activate either ability, but not both, by tapping one of these creatures. So you will only gain one life. Having two Resplendent Mentors in play is not cumulative.
Q: If I have Kokusho, the Evening Star in play, and I put another Kokusho in play, can I respond before they die with a Cauldron of Souls to give them both persist?
A: No. After the second Kokusho comes into play, state-based effects are checked, and both Dragons will go to the graveyard before anyone receives priority to play any spells or abilities. You could activate Cauldron of Souls' ability before the second Kokusho comes into play; if you do, then after both Kokushos leave play, one will return.
Q: I have Teferi, Mage of Zalfir in play, and my opponent plays an Isochron Scepter and imprints Orim's Chant. On my next upkeep, can he use the Scepter to play Orim's Chant?
A: No. He can activate Isochron Scepter's ability, but he will not be able to play the copy of the imprinted card when this ability resolves, due to your Teferi.
Q: I play a Thoughtseize, and my opponent counters it. Do I still lose two life?
A: No. You lose two life when Thoughtseize resolves; it is not an additional cost. If Thoughtseize is countered, no part of it will resolve, so you will not lose any life.
Q: When resolving Doomsday, do I need to reveal the cards I search for?
A: No. Doomsday does not instruct you to reveal these five cards, so you do not have to.
