Ask the Judge, 6/16/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: Lands of a specific basic land type produce mana of the associated color. If a land has more than one basic land type, it can produce more than one color of mana.
Q: I play Burn Trail and tap two red creatures to conspire it. My opponent responds by playing Aphotic Whisps, targeting one of the creatures I tapped for conspire. Does this cause the conspire copy to fizzle?
A: No. This conspire cost of this spell was legally paid for when the spell was paid. Changing the color of one of the tapped creatures after all costs are paid will not affect the Burn Trail or its copy.
Q: My opponent has a Wheel of Sun and Moon in play targeting me, and I play a Runed Halo naming Wheel of Sun and Moon. What happens?
A: When Runed Halo resolves, you will have protection from Wheel of Sun and Moon. This will make the Wheel of Sun and Moon that is in play illegally attached to you. It will then 'fall off' and go to the graveyard.
Q: Will I draw a card from Sygg, River Cutthroat's ability at the end of my turn if I dealt my opponent three damage with Incinerate and the opponent gained three life by sacrificing Bottle Gnomes?
A: Yes. The fact that your opponent's life total is where it was when the turn began does not matter. All that matters is that your opponent did lose three life over the course of the turn.
Q: How does persist interact with cards like Glorious Anthem and Wizened Cenn? Do the +1/+1 bonus from these cards and the -1/-1 counter from persist cancel each other out, giving the cards multiple trips back from the graveyard?
A: No, effects that give +1/+1 without using counters do not work the same as +1/+1 counters. If a permanent has both a -1/-1 and a +1/+1 counter on it, both will cease to exist. But no counters will be removed if a card has a -1/-1 counter on it and is affected by an effect that gives this creature +1/+1.
Q: Can you use Sinking Feeling to enchant a creature and have it essentially be Torture for 1?
A: Not if you are enchanting a creature controlled by another player. That activated ability is given to the enchanted creature; only the controller of that creature can choose to use that ability.
Q: I have a Sower of Temptation in play, stealing one of my opponent's creatures. If I play Ixidron, will I still control the stolen creature, or will my opponent regain control of it?
A: You will still control this creature; it does not matter that the creature and the Sower are both face down. You still control the Sower; it does not matter that its characteristics have changed.
Q: If I have Shield of the Oversoul on a green creature and I play Enchanted Evening followed by Patrician's Scorn, does the creature with the Shield on it die?
A: No. When this Patrician's Scorn resolves, it will destroy all enchantments in play. Or, more specifically, those enchantments that can be destroyed. This enchanted green creature will be indestructible, so it will not be destroyed. It does not matter that the enchantment that kept it from being destroyed leaves play.
Q: I have a question about hybrid mana symbols. My uncle played a Ghastlord of Fugue and spent all black mana to play it. I responded by Red Elemental Blasting it, and he said I couldn't do that, since he paid all black mana. Can you clarify?
A: He may have only spent black mana on this spell, but at all times it is both a blue and black object. The mana that was spent on it does not matter. This means that you can counter it with a Red Elemental Blast, even if no blue mana was spent to play it.
Q: My opponent plays a Summon The School, putting two Merfolk tokens into play. At the end of his turn, he taps both Merfolk, untaps them with Merrow Commerce, and taps them again to return Summon the School to his hand. Is this a legal play?
A: No. In order to activate Summon the School's ability to return it to your hand, all four Merfolk must be tapped at one time. You cannot not tap two, allow Merrow Commerce's ability to resolve, and then tap another two.
Q: If I attack with a Preeminent Captain and put a Goldmeadow Stalwart into play attacking, do I need to reveal a Kithkin or pay three mana as an additional cost?
A: No, you only have to either reveal a Kitkin card or pay three extra mana when you play Goldmeadow Stalwart. In this situation, you are putting the Stalwart directly into play, so you do not have to deal with the additional cost.
