Ask the Judge, 6/25/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: There is no such thing as 'speed' in Magic. Spells and abilities either use the stack or they do not. Some abilities can only be played at certain times, but that does not change when or how they resolve. Anything that does use the stack will wait to resolve just like anything else that uses the stack.
Q: If I have Magus of the Tabernacle in play and a Mirrorweave in hand, is there any way that I can play the Mirrorweave at the beginning of my opponent's upkeep, so that his creatures will have a large number of upkeep triggers?
A: No. The ability given to creatures by Magus of the Tabernacle triggers when the upkeep step begins. No player receives priority until after these abilities have triggered and gone on the stack. Turning all creatures in play into copies of the Magus at this point will not cause these abilities to trigger.
Q: I have a Mirror Entity in play with three other creatures. I activate the Entity for 5 and attack. My opponent casts Mirrorweave on my Mirror Entity. He says all my creatures become 1/1 Mirror Entities. I say they become 5/5 Mirror Entities. Who is right?
A: You are. Making these creatures into copies of Mirror Entity does not negate the effect that was applied to them by Mirror Entity's ability.
Q: A green creature enchanted by Shield of the Oversoul attacks and is blocked by a creature with wither. Will the green creature get -1/-1?
A: Yes. Being indestructible does not prevent damage from begin dealt to it or prevent it from receiving -1/-1 counters. Also, if this creature receives enough -1/-1 counters that its toughness is lowered to zero or below, it will go to the graveyard, even though it is indestructible.
Q: I control a Saltskitter and Puca's Mischief, can I use the Mischief to switch control of the Saltskitter with something else, then play a creature, end my turn, and regain control of Saltskitter?
A: Yes, that does work, as Saltskitter's ability returns it to play under its owner's control, and not its previous controller's.
Q: If a player animates a land, such as Mutavault or Treetop Village, and a Mirrorweave is played, targeting a Lanowar Elves, will the land remain a creature until the end of the following turn?
A: No, the copy effect from the Mirrorweave and the animation effect from the land will end at the same time, in the cleanup step of the current turn. These two cards do not combine in any way that allows those 'man lands' to stay creatures for more than one turn.
Q: If I use a Sigil Tracer to copy a Memory Sluice, can I conspire that copy?
A: No, conspire costs can only be played when you play a spell with conspire.
Q: My opponent controls a Treetop Village and has a Prismatic Omen in play. Can I still sacrifice my Fulminator Mage to destroy the Village?
A: Yes, giving the Village basic land types does not make it a basic land. It can still be targeted by effects that target nonbasic lands.
Q: I have a Dralnu, Lich Lord and a Frogtosser Banneret in play. I have a Morsel Theft in my graveyard. Will the Banneret's ability allow me to play the Morsel Theft from my graveyard for 1 less, if I tap Dralnu to give Morsel Theft flashback?
A: Yes. The Banneret ability will lower the cost of a card, regardless of what cost is paid to play it. It will lower the flashback cost of this Morsel Theft by 1.
Q: If I attach Firebreathing to a Ceaseless Searblades, it will get +2/+0 for every time I use the ability on the enchantment, right?
A: No it will not. Firebreathing does not give an ability to the enchanted creature. It has an ability that creates an effect that is applied to the enchanted creature. Activating Firebreathing's ability is not activating the ability of an Elemental, even if Firebreathing is attached to an Elemental.
Q: I have a Neurok Stealthsuit and Horobi, Death's Wail in play and Wail of the Nim in my hand. I play Wail of the Nim, choosing to regenerate all creatures I control. I then attach the Stealthsuit to Horobi. Will he die or regenerate with the Stealthsuit on him?
A: Horobi will remain in play and then the Stealthsuit will become attached to it. When you play the equip ability, Horobi's ability triggers and goes on the stack on top of the equip ability. When Horobi's ability resolves, Horobi will be destroyed. However, it will regenerate and remain in play, due to the previously played Wail of the Nim. Then the equip ability will resolve and the Stealthsuit will attach to Horobi.
Q: Can I Stifle the Blacker Lotus effect of tearing it into pieces?
A: No. That is an action that is carried out when Blacker Lotus's mana ability resolves; it is not a separate ability from Blacker Lotus's activated mana ability.
