Ask the Judge, 7/11/2008: Feature Friday
A Brief Interlude
Originally, this was meant to be an article discussing cases where judges have the tendency to overthink, and cases where they have a tendency to jump to conclusions, and what to do about either of these cases. Various non-Magic circumstances conspired, however, to prevent me from having time to give that topic a thorough treatment, so rather than giving it short shrift, we'll save that topic for next month. In the meantime, a couple quick suggestions.
If you haven't done this in the last year, consider taking the time to reflect on your progress in judging over the last year, and what you think you'd like to accomplish over the course of the next year. You may be happy with what you're doing and just wish to brush up a bit on some of your skills or get a little better at the types of events you're already involved in. Or this might be the year to try something new, or to step back and make time for other things. And, while you're thinking about it, consider writing a self-review in the Judge Center to let the DCI in on your thinking.
Also, you've probably heard, but with the upcoming changes to how new sets are released in the tournament world, the imminent Eventide Prerelease is the last hurrah for Prerelease tournaments as we currently know them, before they enter the era of the Wizards Play Network. Make sure to enjoy it, and to start a discussion with your local TOs and stores about what things will look like in September and how you can stay involved. And don't forget about the Rules Primer! While your rules knowledge should be sufficient to figure out what you need to on your own, it never hurts to check your understanding.
See you next month!
