Ask the Judge, 7/14/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: If a card would go to a graveyard, library, or hand of anyone other than its owner, it goes to the graveyard, library or hand of its owner instead.
Q: Does Painter's Servant ability, set to white, cause Yawgmoth's Edict to trigger?
A: Yes, any spell played by an opponent after the Painter's Servant comes into play will cause the Edict to trigger.
Q: I have Enchanted Evening and Femeref Enchantress in play. Will cards that go into graveyards remain enchantments long enough to trigger the Enchantress?
A: Yes, Femeref Enchantress's ability is a leaves-play triggered ability; with Enchanted Evening in play, it will trigger whenever any permanent leaves play and goes to the graveyard. This is based on the game seeing that the permanent was an enchantment as it left play; non-enchantment permanents will not be enchantments in the graveyard at any time.
Q: I have two copies of Chameleon Colossus in play attacking. My opponent has a Knight of Meadowgrain and a Goldmeadow Harrier in play. He plays Mirrorweave, targeting his Goldmeadow Harrier. In response, I activate each Colossus's ability, giving them each +4/+4 until the end of turn. Once Mirrorweave resolves, do my Colossi become 1/1 Goldmeadow Harriers or 5/5 Goldmeadow Harriers, because of the +4/+4?
A: They will be 5/5s. When Chameleon Colossus's ability resolves, it 'locks in' the increase to power and toughness that is given to the Colossus. If the Colossus later becomes a copy of something else, the effect from this ability is still applied.
Q: If you have Auntie's Hovel in play and copy it with Vesuva, can you reveal a Goblin card and cause the Vesuva copy of Auntie's Hovel to come into play untapped, or does Vesuva still stay tapped due to Vesuva's text?
A: You can choose to reveal a Goblin card in your hand, but Vesuva's ability will bring it into play tapped, regardless.
Q: I have Decree of Silence and Guile in play. When my opponent plays a spell, can I instead play the spell and avoid adding a depletion counter to Decree of Silence, since the spell wasn't actually countered?
A: No. When Decree of Silence's ability resolves, the spell that triggered this ability will normally be countered, and the Decree will get a counter. With Guile in play, the spell is technically not countered, but the Decree will get a counter. This is because the addition of a counter is not contingent on the spell being countered.
Q: Benthicore has a counter from Makeshift Mannequin on it. Can you give it shroud in response to Benthicore being targeted, or does it still get sacrificed anyway?
A: You can respond by giving it shroud, but that won't change things. The triggered ability given to this creature by Makeshift Mannequin will trigger as soon as it is targeted. Giving this creature shroud will not counter this triggered ability. You will still have to sacrifice it.
Q: If Auriok Steelshaper is equipped with Runed Stalactite, does it become a 4/4 from its ability, or just a 3/3?
A: Just a 3/3. Auriok Steelshaper's ability does not give +1/+1 to Knights and +1/+1 to Soldiers, it gives +1/+1 to a creature if it is a Knight, Soldier or both.
Q: How do Land Equilibrium and Storm Cauldron interact? Can my opponent tap a land for mana in order to return it to his hand, in order to avoid sacrificing it to Land Equilibrium's ability?
A: No. Land Equilibrium changes the process of putting a land into play. It does not have an ability that triggers when you put a land into play. This includes playing a land. When your opponent plays a land he will not be able to do anything before he sacrifices a land.
Q: Does having multiple copies of High Ground in play allow my creatures to block 3, 4, 5, or more creatures each?
A: Yes, the effect is cumulative, and each High Ground you control will allow each of your creatures to block an additional creature.
Q: If I ask for my opponent's hand size, can they refuse to tell me?
A: At any Competitive and Professional REL event they can, but they must offer a means for you to figure it out, like laying their cards out so you can count. Your opponent cannot conceal his hand in order to prevent you from easily figuring it out. At regular REL events (FNM, prereleases) they must answer or call a judge if they feel they are unable to answer the question.
