Rules Tip of the Day: Local enchantments enchanting creatures and equipment attached to creatures do not become tapped when the creature becomes tapped.
Q: This came up at a in a recent game. Both player's graveyards were very full. I played Pyrrhic Revival. In my graveyard was a Necroskitter and a Soul Snuffer. Pyrrhic Revival resolved, and I stated that I placed Necroskitter's triggers below those of Soul Snuffers. My opponent argued that I cannot do that; that I have to place 187s [Leaves-play triggers -Seamus] on the stack, then state-based effects are checked. I believe that state-based effects are checked before I place abilities on the stack, allowing me to place Necroskitter's triggers below Soul Snuffers' and steal all of his x/1s. Who is correct?
A: You are. Triggered abilities will not go on the stack until a player receives priority after state-based effects are checked. It does not matter that, technically speaking, the ability of the Soul Snuffers triggered first, as it came into play before state-based effects were checked. As you control all of these triggers, you can choose to put Necroskitter's triggers on the stack first, so it resolves last.
Q: If I have Kithkin Spellduster in play with Pacifism on it, can I use his ability targeting the Pacifism if no other targets are in play?
A: Yes. When you choose the target of the Spellduster's ability, the Pacifism is in play and a legal target for the ability.
Q: Who does Recumbent Bliss give life to: the controller of the Recumbent Bliss, or the controller of the creature its enchanting?
A: Recumbent Bliss does not give any abilities to the enchanted creature; that ability is on Recumbent Bliss. The word 'you' refers to the controller of Recumbent Bliss, not the controller of the enchanted creature. The controller of Recumbent Bliss will be the one that can gain life.
Q: Does Necroskitter's triggered ability work on token creatures, or do they cease to exist and fizzle the ability?
A: Technically speaking, token creatures with -1/-1 counters on them will trigger Necroskitter's ability when they leave play and these abilities will resolve. However, once token creatures leave play, they cannot return to play, so nothing will return to play under your control.
Q: The recent changes of the "potential" mana an ability can produce are confusing me, particularly the interaction of Reflecting Pool with storage lands, hybrid lands, Vivid lands and the older Gaea's Cradle or Tolarian Academy. Can you explain to me how it works?
A: Imagine that you have played a mana ability of a land you have. Whether you can pay the cost of this mana ability does not matter. Reflecting Pool will be able to generate any color of mana that that ability could create. Gaea's Cradle always has an ability that generates green mana, even if sometimes it doesn't actually make any, so Reflecting Pool will always see a green mana ability. This also applies to the Academy, if you have no artifacts. Storage lands, hybrid lands, and Vivid lands all still work the same way, for a slightly different reason: their abilities always generate mana, even if you can't always pay the cost.
Q: If I return my opponent's Windbrisk Heights to his hand with a Cryptic Command, or destroy it with a Fulminator Mage, does the removed card become common knowledge?
A: No, the card will remain face down. It does not matter that the source of the ability that removed it from the game has left play; it will continue to remain face down. Your opponent will continue to be able to look at it, but you will not.
Q: I play Ashling The Pilgrim's ability three times in a turn. On the third resolution, can I play it a few more times in response to the counter-removal-and-damage effect triggering to inflict more damage?
A: No, the third ability to resolve will cause you to remove all counters from Ashling the Pilgrim and will deal damage to all creatures equal to the number of counters removed. You can't do anything once this third ability resolves. You can activate the ability again before this third activation resolves, but that will just make the new activation the third to resolve.
Q: If I have six cards in my graveyard, one of which is Bogardan Hellkite, and I cast Stitch Together, what happens? Will the Stitch Together get to the graveyard fast enough for me to achieve threshold or will I have to take the Bogardan Hellkite back to my hand?
A: The creature you targeted will be returned to your hand. As it resolves, Stitch Together will be on the stack, not in your graveyard.
Q: If you play Buried Alive to search your library for three creature cards and pick three Basking Rootwallas, do they go to your hand before going to the graveyard, allowing you to play them with their madness abilities?
A: No, they go from your library to your graveyard, they do not go to your hand at all, and are therefore not discarded.
Q: I have five cards in my hand and a Library of Alexandria in play. I play Brainstorm, drawing three cards and increasing my hand count to seven. Can I, at that one instant, tap the Library of Alexandria and draw an extra card before I must put two back?
A: No. While Brainstorm is resolving, no players receive priority to play any spells or abilities. By the time you do receive priority, Brainstorm will have completely resolved, and you will be back down to five cards in hand.
