Ask the Judge, 8/14/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: Abilities that trigger on combat damage being dealt will not trigger when damage from spells and abilities is dealt in the combat phase.
Q: Can the Rosheen Meanderer's mana ability be used on a resolved Rise of the Hobgoblins to generate tokens?
A: Yes. Rise of the Hobgoblins' comes-into-play ability has you choose a value for X and pay this cost. This is an 'X' cost, so you can use the mana from Rosheen Meanderer to pay all or part of it.
Q: If I play Moonlace targeting an Edge of Divinity spell in response to Nightsky Mimic's ability going on the stack, will the Nightsky Mimic still become a 7/7 flying creature or just a 5/4 after all spells resovle?
A: When the Edge of the Divinity comes into play, the Mimic will become a 7/7 creature. Nightsky Mimic's ability triggered when Edge of the Divinity was played. Making Edge of the Divinity colorless while it is on the stack will not retroactively make the Mimic's ability not trigger. You are better off making the Mimic colorless, as it will not get any bonus from Edge of the Divinity's two static abilities.
Q: Can you Stifle the third ability of Wilt-Leaf Liege?
A: No, that ability is a static ability that generates a replacement effect. If a spell or ability controlled by an opponent would cause you to discard the Liege, instead it is put into play. This happens as it is discarded and it does not use the stack.
Q: If my opponent has an Ashenmoor Liege in his graveyard and I use Extirpate on it, do I receive 16 points of damage, if any, or just the first four points of damage?
A: You will not lose any life (the Liege's ability causes loss of life, not damage). Ashenmoor Liege's ability triggers when it is a permanent in play and targeted. When an Ashenmoor Liege card in another zone is targeted, the ability will not trigger. Also, Extirpate does not target anything other than the original card in a graveyard. The other copies of Ashenmoor Liege in your graveyard, library, and hand are not targeted.
Q: With Dovescape in play, can I play an Academy Researchers and put an Aura card from my hand into play attached to it, or will the Aura card be countered by Dovescape?
A: It will not be countered. When Academy Researchers' ability resolves, you put an Aura card in your hand into play attached to the Researchers. This Aura is not played, so Dovescape's ability will not trigger
Q: My opponent has an attacking Shape Stealer which he has targeted with Shinen of Life's Roar's channel ability. He states that Shape Stealer's power and touhgess is equal to the total power and toughness of all the blocking creatures? Is this right, or does he just pick one?
A: In the end he will just pick one; Shape Stealer does not gain power and toughness equal to the combined power and toughness of all blocking creatures. When it is blocked, its ability will trigger for each blocking creature. The last ability to resolves will determine the P/T of the Shape Stealer.
Q: Player A plays Mangara's Blessing. Player B plays Counterspell targeting it. Player A then claims that the effect of Counterspell causes the Mangara's Blessing to be 'discarded', which causes it to be returned to his hand. Is this correct?
A: No. When this spell was played, it was put on the stack. Countering it will put it into its owner's graveyard, but it is not discarded. Cards that are discarded go from a player's hand to their graveyard. Cards that go to the graveyard from any other zone are not discarded.
Q: My opponent was given a game loss due to misregistering his deck, so we go to game 2. I know what his deck is, but he doesn't know my deck. Can I sideboard out some of my cards, even though we have never actually played a game 1?
A: No, this game is still the first played game, so neither of you will be able to sideboard. You will only be able to sideboard if you play a second game.
Q: In a multiplayer situation, if Jinxed Choker deals enough damage to kill its controller (someone other than its owner), does Jinxed Choker leave the game, go to its owner's graveyard, or does it get moved to another player?
A: It will not leave the game; it will go under the control of another player. The last change of control effect that gave this player control of the Chocker will end and the previous player who controlled Jinxed Choker will regain control of it.
Q: Does Rare-B-Gone destroy mythic rare permanents and force the discard of mythic rare cards?
A: No. Mythic is—or will be—a different rarity from rare, not just a subset of it.
