Ask the Judge, 8/26/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: Any time an effect has you choose a color or generate a color of mana, you must choose one of the five colors that exists in Magic: white, blue, black, red, or green.
Q: Player A has a Quillspike and a Devoted Druid, Player B also has a Quillspike and a Devoted Druid. A attacks with the Quillspike. B blocks with his Quillspike. A wants his Quillspike to be bigger than B's, and vice versa. If A tries to pump, B pumps his more. A obviously wants to pump it some more when he gets priority back, and then player B pumps it some more when he gets priority again, etc. In a tournament, how is this gridlock resolved?
A: Player B will win, sort of. Both players have loops with optional actions. In order to move the game along, A, as the active player, must choose a number of times to perform the loop and then B, the non-active player, can choose a number of times to perform his. B will most likely choose to do it more times than A. Keep in mind that both players can repeat the loop in the combat damage step after combat damage has resolved so that neither Quillspike receives lethal damage.
Q: I have Rhys the Redeemed and ten token Elves. I play Rhys's ability, and then I play Mirrorweave targeting my Imperious Perfect. Will the tokens generated give my Elves +1/+1Ę
A: Yes. Copy effects do copy other copy effects. In this example, Mirrorweave will resolve first and make all of your creatures into Imperious Perfects. Then Rhys's ability will resolve and put tokens into play that are copies of your other tokens. At this point, your token creatures are Imperious Perfects, so Rhys's ability will put additional Imperious Perfects into play.
Q: I have Puca's Mischief in play, and I have enchanted my opponent's Grizzly Bears with Control Magic. Can I exchange control of my stolen Grizzly Bears and my opponent's other Grizzly Bears with Puca's Mischief, and get the first back as a static ability from Control Magic?
A: No, the change of control effect from Puca's Mischief is applied after the effect from Control Magic. These effects are applied in timestamp order. Your opponent will retain control of your Bears.
Q: I have a Flame Jab in my graveyard, and my opponent targets it with Beckon Apparition. If I retrace the Flame Jab while the Apparition is on the stack, will the Apparition fizzle?
A: If you play Flame Jab while this Beckon Apparition is on the stack, then yes, it will be countered on resolution. However, Flame Jab is a sorcery, and you cannot play it unless it is one of the main phases of your turn and the stack is empty.
Q: If Hostility cannot prevent the damage from your spell, as when Everlasting Torment is in play, does it still make tokens?
A: No. Hostility's ability states that it puts 3/1 tokens into play for each point of damage that was prevented by Hostility's ability. If no damage is prevented, then no 3/1s will come into play.
Q: Can Boggart Shenanigans be destroyed by normal "destroy enchantment" cards like Tranquility and Naturalize?
A: Yes. It is an enchantment; it does not matter that is is also tribal.
Q: If I play Warp World, and I reveal a planeswalker, does it come into play?
A: No. Warp World has you shuffle all permanent cards you own into your library, but it only allows you to put artifacts, creatures, lands, and enchantments into play This means that you will shuffle in planeswalkers you own, but you will not be able to put any into play.
Q: If I use Chord of Calling to put an Ivy Elemental into play, does Ivy Elemental go to the graveyard because X is zero, or is the X in Ivy Elemental equal to the X in Chord of Calling minus 1?
A: The converted mana cost of an Ivy Elemental card in your library is one. This is because the value of X in the converted mana cost of an object in any zone other than the stack is treated as zero. You cay pay more than 1GGG to play Chord of Calling and search for Ivy Elemental, but that is because Chord of Calling allows you to search for a creature card with a converted mana cost of X or less. Nothing spent on X over one carries over and makes this sought-for Ivy Elemental bigger. So when this Chord resolves, the Ivy Elemental will enter play as a 0/0, and it will go to the graveyard when state-based effects are checked.
Q: If I play Natural Affinity and then enchant one of the animated lands with Alpha Status, does it get the Alpha Status boost from all my lands in play?
A: No. The lands animated by Natural Affinity do not have any creature types, so they will not have any creature types to share.
