Ask the Judge, 9/16/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: Targets for a spell or ability are chosen when the spell or ability is played.
Q: What should happen if my opponant plays a Mirrorweave on my Ajani token?
A: All creatures in play will end up having power and toughness equal to their controller's life total. The ability that sets the power and toughness of these tokens is an ability of the token and is a copiable characteristic.
Q: My opponant has a Wake Thrasher in play with four untapped lands. At the end of my turn, he taps his lands and takes mana burn. I wish to resolve a Makeshift Mannequin, but expect he has Cryptic Command in hand. Is there any point I can cast my spell before he untaps without him being able to use his floating mana?
A: No. He will not take mana burn until the phase ends. You will not get the chance to play anything after this mana in his pool has gone away and before your turn begins.
Q: I was thinking of putting Polluted Bonds in my deck. I also have Herald of Leshrac in my deck, which takes control of opponents' lands as a cumulative upkeep. If the Herald goes to the graveyard and I return control of the lands I stole, do I gain life and deal damage to my opponents because of Polluted Bonds?
A: No, as these lands do not come into play. They are already in play, they just changed controllers. Because of this, Polluted Bonds' ability will not trigger.
Q: If I gain control of Bitterblossom at the beginning of my upkeep through Dominus of Fealty, will Bitterblossom still create a token for me?
A: No. Abilities that trigger at the beginning of an upkeep step only trigger if you control the source of the ability when the upkeep step begins.
Q: An opponent attacks me with two Hypnotic Specters while I have no cards in my hand. I block one with a 1/1 creature enchanted with Fallen Ideal. He says I must discard the Fallen Ideal when it returns to my hand, but I'm not sure when it resolves.
A: You will discard the Fallen Ideal. When combat damage is dealt, the ability of each attacking unblocked Specter will trigger, but they won't go on the stack quite yet. State-based effects are checked, and your blocking creature will go to the graveyard. SBEs are checked again, and the Fallen Ideal will go to the graveyard and its ability will trigger. Then, because a player will finally receive priority at this point, all of these triggered abilities will go on the stack. As you are the non-active player, the triggered ability from your Fallen Ideal will go on the stack last and resolve first. Because of this, it will be in your hand when your opponent's first Specter ability resolve, and you will have to discard it.
Q: The Oracle text on Temple Acolyte says that when it comes into play, you gain three life. But the card itself says that you gain the life only if it comes into play "from your hand". Is this card useful with Astral Slide?
A: Yes. Its Oracle text is its official text and it works a bit differently from its printed version. Its ability will trigger however it comes into play, including via Astral Slide's ability.
Q: Can I target an opponent's Faith's Fetters that is targeting my Boon Reflection with another Faith's Fetters, so they cancel each other and my Boon activated abilities work again?
A: No, but none of those cards work quite like you think they do. Boon Reflection does not have an activated ability, it has a static ability. Enchanting one with Faith's Fetters will not prevent you from gaining twice the amount of life you normally would. Also, Faith's Fetters ability that prevents a player from playing the activated abilities of a permanent is also a static ability. Enchanting one Faith's Fetters with another will not affect the first.
Q: Is it possible (or even legal) to cast Condemn on one of your own attacking creatures?
A: Yes, there is nothing that prevents you from targeting an attacking creature you control with your own Condemn.
Q: If a land is played using Gate to the Aether does it count as my one land for the turn?
A: No, you put this revealed card into play; it is not played. If a land is put into play this way, it will not count as the one land you may play during each of your turns.
Q: With Humility in play, do the creatures retain their creature types?
A: They will keep their creature types. Supertypes, types, and subtypes are not abilities; they are qualities. Effects that causes a creature to lose its abilities will not affect its types.
