Rules Tip of the Day: A spell or ability is only countered on resolution if all of its targets are illegal when it tries to resolve. If at least one target is legal at that point, then the spell will resolve and do as much as possible.
Q: I play Endless Horizons and remove some Plains from the game. Then my opponent returns Endless Horizons to my hand with a Boomerang. If I replay the same Endless Horizons card, can I play the Plains removed using that card previously?
A: No, this Endless Horizons in play is a new permanent with no connection to the one that was previously in play. It does not matter that it is represented by the same card.
Q: I have Dominus of Fealty in play and my opponent has Smokestack with one counter on it. When my turn starts, can I take control of Smokestack and sacrifice it to itself?
A: No. At the beginning of your upkeep, the ability of Dominus of Fealty and the ability of Smokestack will trigger at the same time. When this happens, they go on the stack in APNAP (active player, non-active player) order. This means that the abilities controlled by you, the active player, go on the stack first, followed by those controlled by the non-active player. Items on the stack resolve in LIFO (last In, First Out) order, so the Smokestack ability will resolve first. When it does, you will have to sacrifice a permanent before you gain control of the permanent targeted by the Dominus's ability.
Q: I have a Demigod of Revenge in play, with an Ashenmoor Gouger and a Tattermunge Maniac in my graveyard. If I Mirrorweave my Demigod of Revenge and play a second Demigod of Revenge from my hand, will it bring the Ashenmoor Gouger and Tattermunge Maniac back into the game as Demigods?
A: No, the cards in your graveyard are completely unaffected by Mirrorweave. Creatures only exist in play, so Mirrorweaave only affects creature permanents and not creature cards in other zones. The creature cards in your graveyard will not become Demigod of Revenge cards, so they will not be brought into play. Additionally, any creature that enters play after Mirrorweave resolves will not be a copy of whatever was targeted by Mirrorweave.
Q: Regarding Colfenor's Urn, do the three creatures have to be removed from the game in the same turn?
A: No, Colfenor's Urn's ability will trigger at the end of every turn in which three creature cards in total have been removed from the game by the Urn's ability. These cards do not all have to have been removed from the game in the same turn.
Q: My opponent attacks with a 2/3 flyer. I activate Silvergill Douser, targeting the flyer, to give it -4/-0. My opponent lets the Douser's ability resolve. Then he plays Wings of Velis Vel, targeting his flyer. Is his creature now 4/4, or 0/4?
A: It will be a 4/4. Both the continuous effect from Silvergill Douser and the power- and toughness-setting effect from Wings of Velis Vell are applied in the same sublayer according to timestamp order. When figuring out the P/T of this creature, it starts out as a 2/3, drops to -2/3, and then finally ends up a 4/4.
Q: If I were to reanimate Phage the Untouchable and in response play Sudden Spoiling, targeting myself, would her effect still make it to the stack, or would it be nullified by the split second removal of her abilities?
A: No, the ability will be handled normally. Sudden Spoiling only affects those creatures that are in play when it resolves. In this situation Phage is not in play when Sudden Spoiling resolves. It will enter play as a 'normal' Phage and its ability will trigger. If Phage has already entered play, Sudden Spoiling will not do anything to the triggered ability on the stack.
Q: I was hoping to clarify the interaction of Animate Dead and Enchantment Alteration. One of the points that seems to be unclear is any final removal of the Aura. Here is how I believe it works: 1) Animate Dead is played and brings creature X from the graveyard into play. Animate Dead is attached to creature X 2) Enchantment Alteration moves the Animate Dead Aura from creature X to creature Y.
A: Let me stop you right there; what you have described cannot happen. Enchantment Alteration can only move an Aura from one object it can enchant to another legal object it can enchant. Animate Dead has had its official text changed yet again to prevent this from happening. After Animate Dead's comes-into-play ability has resolved, its text reads, "enchant creature put into play with Animate Dead." This means that it can only enchant a creature that has been put into play via Animate Dead's comes-into-play ability. In other words, you cannot move it to a different creature.
Q: In a multiplayer game, if a Mindslicer blocks a trampling creature and then the remaining damage is enough to kill the defending player, does the Mindslicer hit the graveyard and cause all other players to pitch their hands?
A: When this combat damage is dealt, the defending player and the Mindslicer will receive lethal damage. When state-based effects are checked, this player will lose the game and the Mindslicer will go to the graveyard. This will trigger Mindslicer's ability. However, because the controller of this ability is no longer in the game, this triggered ability will not go on the stack. So no, the other players in the game will not discard their hands.
