Ask the Judge, 10/13/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: The ability of the Shards of Alara card Angel's Herald instructs you to sacrifice three different creatures. This means that you cannot sacrifice just one creature that is green, white, and blue to search for Empyrial Archangel. You can sacrifice a multicolored creatures, but you will still have to sacrifice two other creatures as well.
Q: I attack with Hissing Iguanar. It gets blocked and both creatures go to the graveyard. Will Hissing Iguanar's effect still trigger for the other creature going to the graveyard?
A: Yes. Hissing Iguanar's ability will trigger for creatures that leave play at the same time that it does. This is because Hissing Iguanar has a leaves-play triggered ability. Whenever a permanent leaves play, the game looks back to see if any relevant abilities triggered when this permanent left play. Because you do back up to look, the Hissing Iguanar will be in play at that point, and its ability will trigger.
Q: I have Minion Reflector in play. If I play Reveillark and pay to make a copy, am I correct in assuming that when the token copy of Reveillark leaves play, I will play its normal leaves-play trigger?
A: Yes. This token copy is an exact copy of the original Reveilark. When it leaves play, its leaves-play triggered ability wil trigger.
Q: At the beginning of your upkeep, if you have Archdemon of Unx in play, but no non-Zombie creatures (if, for example, the Archdemon of Unx is equipped with a Runed Stalactite, making it a Zombie in addition to all other creature types), what happens?
A: As you cannot sacrifice a non-Zombie, you will not sacrifice anything. However, you always get a zombie token when this triggered ability resoles. Getting this creature is not contingent on sacrificing a non-zombie.
Q: Stoic Angel lets me untap only one creature in my own untap step. But does Murkfiend Liege let me untap any number of green or blue creatures during my opponent's untap?
A: It will cause all of your blue and green creatures to untap in your opponent's untap steps. Stoic Angel's ability only keeps a player from untapping more than one creature in their own untap step. Because of Murkfiend Liege, you untap your blue and green creatures in each other untap step. This is not affected by Stoic Angel's ability at all.
Q: When my opponent uses the ability of Esper Battlemage and targets my Stillmoon Cavalier to give it -1/-1, will my Stillmoon Cavalier be protected since it has protection from black and the cost of Esper Battlemage's ability is a black mana?
A: No. The activation cost of that ability costs black mana, but the Esper Battlemage is a blue permanent.
Q: If I have an Oath of Druids that brings a Countryside Crusher into play, and eight lands are put into the graveyard during the process, does he get eight +1/+1 counters?
A: Yes. When Oath of Druids' ability resolves, the revealed creature card is put into play before all other revealed cards are put into their owner's graveyard. If Countryside Crusher is put into play, then its ability will trigger for any land cards that are put into the graveyard while this ability resolves.
Q: Player A has a Runed Halo in play and chooses Balefire Liege. Player B has a Balefire Liege in play and plays a red spell. Since A cannot be the target of Balefire does player B have to target himself?
A: Yes. When this triggered abiltiy goes on the stack, a legal target must be chosen. As player A has protection from Balefire Liege, he cannot be targeted by this ability. Then, when the ability resolves, it will deal three points of damage to the targeted player. This is not an option, as the ability does not use the word may.
Q: I have Temporal Aperture in play. I use the ability, a Shivan Wumpus is revealed and I play it. After it comes into play, my opponent sacks a land to return him to the top of my library. Can I repeat the process over and over?
A: No. When a card moves from one zone to another, it becomes a new object. Effects that were applied to it previously will not do so any longer. When this Shivan Wumpus goes on top of your library, it will not be affected by Temporal Aperature's effect. Also, the wording of Temporal Aperture means that the effect will stop functioning as soon as you play the card.
Q: After I use Fire Covenant, is it possible for me to use Simulacrum to gain my life back, as long as my life isn't reduced to zero?
A: No. Simulacrum only cause you to gain life equal to the damage that was dealt to you that turn. It does not allow you to gain life equal to the life you lost or paid.
