Ask the Judge, 10/16/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: The ability of the Shards of Alara card Dragon's Herald instructs you to sacrifice three different creatures. This means that you cannot sacrifice just one creature that is black, red, and green to search for Hellkite Overlord. You can sacrifice a multicolored creature, but you will still have to sacrifice two other creatures as well.
Q: If I sacrifice an artifact creature with modular to pay Salvage Titan's cost, can I place the counters on Salvage Titan?
A: No. The modular ability targets when it goes on the stack. If you sacrifice a modular creature to play the alternate play cost of Salvage Titan, then this ability will go on the stack before the Titan enters play. As the Titan is not in play at this point, it cannot be targeted by this ability.
Q: I have a question about devour creatures. Say I used Warp World, and I warped in a Mycolyth. Would the devour ability go on the stack like any other triggered ability? Or does it happen instantly? I'm curious because I want to know if I can devour other creatures that are put into play from that same Warp World or not.
A: Devour does not use the stack; it is applied as the devour creature enters play. As this is happening during the resolution of Warp World, there will not be any permanents in play when you are given the opportunity to sacrifice creatures to the devour ability. Because of this, the Mycolyth will not gain any +1/+1 counters.
Q: When I have both Sedris, the Traitor King and Vedalken Orrery in play, can I unearth creature in an opponent's turn?
A: No. Vedalken Orrery allows you to play nonland cards as thought they had flash. To play a card means to announce it as a spell. It does not change when you can play the unearth ability.
Q: If my life total is greater than the current number of cards in my library when I play Invincible Hymn do I technically gain life?
A: No. If your life total is less than the number of cards you have in your library when Invincible Hymn resolves, you will end up losing life.
Q: I have three creatures in play. It's turn 3, and I put Shelldock Isle into play. I look at the top four cards of my library and choose a Ward of Bones to be removed from the game face-down. Then on my next turn, I play Windbrisk Heights. I use the hideaway ability and choose another card to be removed (a different one). The question is, can I play the Ward of Bones by paying for the ability and meeting the conditions of the Windbrisk Heights?
A: No. You can only play the specific card that is removed from the game by an individual hideaway land. These removed cards are not interchangeable.
Q: If I have Circu, Dimir Lobotomist in play and I counter a spell with Memory Lapse, does the card go on top of my opponent's deck, then get removed from the game, because Circu's ability doesn't trigger until after Memory Lapse has resolved, or does my opponent remove the top card of his deck before the countered card is put on top of his deck?
A: Your opponent will remove a card from his library before Memory Lapse puts the countered spell on top of it. Circu's ability triggers when you play Memory Lapse, not when it resolves. This trigger will go on the stack on top of the Memory Lapse and resolve first.
Q: I have Kaervek the Merciless in play, and my friend plays Change Of Heart with buyback at the beginning of each of my combat phases. Does he take one or four damage each time he does it?
A: Just one. Change of Heart's converted mana cost is always one; it does not matter that its buyback cost was paid.
Q: I have a Circle of Protection: Artifacts in play and my opponent has a non-artifact creature with an artifact equipment on it and attacks. Can the Circle of Protection be used to prevent the damage?
A: No. This creature is equipped with an artifact, but it is not an artifact.
Q: Can I use Glamerdye to change the word "silver" on Ass Whuppin' to another color?
A: Its up to you. Ass Whuppin is an 'Un' card and not meant for serious play. If that's what your groups wants to allow, then its fine. However, by a straight, technical application of the Comprehensive Rules: no, the only color words in Magic are white, blue, black, red, green (and the 'non-' versions of those words). Keep in mind that Ass Whuppin' targets a card with a specifically colored border, so in order to initially play it, you'd have to target a silver-bordered card. If you changed the word "silver" to "white" or "black", then you'd also have to fine a way to change the target of the spell to destroy a card with that color of border, or the spell will be countered on resolution.
