Ask the Judge, 10/22/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: When sideboarding in a constructed event, you must remove a card from your deck for every card that you put in. Therefore, if you use a sideboard, you will always start the game with 15 cards in it.
Q: Do cards that have been removed from the game get shuffled back into your library with Lich's Mirror? I would like to combine Lich's Mirror with Ghostway.
A: What you want to do works. Lich's Mirror does not shuffle cards from the removed from game zone into your library. After you have lost the game and shuffled all permanents you own back into your library, the creatures that have been removed from the game by Ghostway will remain in the removed from game zone. Then, at the beginning of the next end of turn step, the delayed triggered ability created by Ghostway's ability will trigger. These creatuers will return to play when this trigger resolves.
Q: If I devour a Symbiotic Wurm with Caldera Hellion, will the Insect tokens be in play to die to the Hellion's comes-into-play ability?
A: Not necessarily; it's up to you. If you do sacrifice the Symbiotic Wurm to the Hellion's devour ability, then the Wurm's ability will trigger at this time. However, it will not go on the stack until a player receives priority. Then the Caldera Hellion will come into play and its ability will trigger. After this, the active player will receive priority and these two abilities will go on the stack. As you control these two abilities, you can choose the order that they go on the stack relative to each other. This means that you can choose to have the Wurm ability go on the stack first, so it resolves last. This way the Insect tokens will not be in play when the Hellion's ability resolves and deals three points of damage to each creature.
Q: I am playing a Green-White-Blue Merfolk deck with Judge of Currents and I play Clarion Ultimatum, choosing some Merfolk permanents... Do they trigger Judge of Currents' life gain by being tapped, or do they simply come into play tapped and bypass the tapping process?
A: The permanents that come into play when Clarion Ultimatum resolves come into play tapped; they do not enter play and then become tapped. Judge of Currents' ability triggers when a Merfolk permanent becomes tapped; not for those that enter play tapped.
Q: If I have two copies of Puppet Conjurer in play, do I have to sacrifice two Homunculi?
A: Yes, you will need to sacrifice a Homunculus when each of these two upkeep triggered abilities resolves.
Q: I have Where Ancients Tread and Crucible of Fire in play. I play Broodmate Dragon. When the creature comes into play, followed by its mate (token), will I be able to do ten damage to target player?
A: Yes. Each of these Dragons will come into play as a 7/7 creature, so they will trigger Where Ancients Tread's ability.
Q: I have Ethersworn Canonist in play, and my opponent plays Gigadrowse, targeting my lands. Will he be able to play the replicate abillity ?
A: Yes. The replicate ability is played when the initial spell is played. If he does pay this additional cost, then the replicate ability will go on the stack on top of the original spell. The fact that your opponent cannot play any additional non-artifact spells does not matter. When this triggered ability resolves, the appropriate number of copies will go on the stack.
Q: If I have Minion Reflector in play and I play a creature and can afford to pay the two mana multiple times, does that mean I can put multiple copies into play?
A: No, Minion Reflector's ability triggers just once each time a nontoken creature comes into play under your control. When this triggered ability resolves, you can pay two mana just once.
Q: Can Manamorphose produce two mana of the same type (like WW), or does it have to be a combination like WU?
A: Yes, you can choose two of the same type of mana; you do not have to choose two different types of mana when Manamorphose resolves.
Q: I control an Orchard Warden and I play a Chameleon Colossus. Is there a way to use the Colossus's ability to double the amount of life I will gain from the Warden?
Yes. Orchard Warden's ability is a triggered ability that uses the stack, and can be responded to. After Chameleon Colossus enters play and the Warden's ability triggers, you can activate its ability to double its power. Then when the Warden's ability resolves, it will look at the current power of the Colossus and you will gain that much life.
