Ask the Judge, 10/23/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: When damage is redirected by a spell or ability, it is not a new damage event, and the source of the damage does not change. This means that effects that change the amount of damage dealt (for example, Furnace of Rath or Tok-Tok, Volcano Born) will only be applied once and not twice. It also means that the source of the damage is the original source and not the source of the redirection effect.
Q: I have a Lich's Mirror in play and play Ad Naseum, revealing cards until I hit 0 or less life, the Mirror's ability triggers, and I shuffle my hand, graveyard, and permanents back into my library, draw 7 cards and set my life to 20. Can I continue to draw cards on the Ad Naseum?
A: First of all, the Mirror's ability is not triggered. It has a static ability that generates a replacement effect. And no, what you have described is not how things will play out, in fact. The ability from Lich's Mirror does not apply until you actually lose the game. This will not happen until after Ad Nauseam resolves completely and state-based effects are checked. So as this Ad Nauseam resolves, you can choose to keep revealing cards, adding them to your hand and losing life, even after your life total goes to zero. When you choose to stop, Ad Nauseum will stop resolving, and state-based effects will be checked. At this point the effect from Lich's Mirror will be applied if your life total is zero or less. However, because the effect from the Mirror has you shuffle your hand into your library, you won't really gain anything.
Q: When Mycoloth comes into play, can I Stifle the part of its abiliy the puts counters on it?
A: No. Devour is not a triggered ability. It is a static ability that generates a replacement effect that is applied to the Mycoloth coming into play.
Q: If I play Thunder-Thrash Elder while Where Ancients Tread is in play and sacrifice enough creatures to make his power five or more, does Where Ancients Tread's ability trigger, or are the counters added after he's in play?
A: Devour happens as the creature comes into play, and it comes into play with the counters. This means that it can come into play with power of five or more and trigger Where Ancients Tread's ability, as long as you sacrifice at least two creatures.
Q: Am I correct in thinking I can cast Fleshbag Marauder and then immediately sacrifice it to itself?
A: It will be in play when its comes-into-play ability resolves, so yes, you can choose to sacrifice it.
Q: I have a question about how Executioner's Capsule interacts with protection from black. When I sacrifice it to use its ability, does the source count as a black or colorless source?
A: Executioner's Capsule is black, becauase it has a black mana symbol in its mana cost. It does not matter that is is an artifact; that does not make it colorless.
Q: I have both Memory Erosion and Forced Fruition in play at the same time. My opponent plays a spell. Which effect resolves first, the drawing seven or the milling two?
A: It is up to you. You control these two triggered abilities, so you determine the order that they go on the stack and, therefore, the order that they resolve.
Q: My opponent activated Wickerbough Elder's ability to destroy one of my enchantments. In response, I played Incinerate on it. He said that his Elder would still live, since it's already a 4/4 by the time Incinerate resolves. Is he correct?
A: Yes. You remove a counter as part of the cost of the Elder's ability. By the time you even play Incinerate, the Elder is a 4/4 creature.
Q: I played Glimpse the Unthinkable, and four Twincasts. Each Twincast targets the one that came before it, with the first Twincast targeting Glimpse the Unthinkable. Using the stack rules, how many cards am I milling?
A: 50. When the topmost Twincast resolves, it just makes another Twincast. You can have this Twincast target anything on the stack, but if you target another Twincast, it'll just make another Twincast. Eventually you'll have to have each Twincast on the stack target the Glimpse; doing anything else is just stalling. By the time everything resolves, you have milled 50 cards.
Q: My opponent has an Ornithopter in play enchanted with Coalition Flag. If I play Shattering Spree and replicate it, would I have to keep targeting the Ornithopter every time I replicate it, or can I choose a new target, since the original spell would destroy it?
A: You will end up having to target this Ornithopter will all of these copies. When your opponent plays this Shattering Spree and pays its replicate cost, the replicate ability will go on the stack on top of the Shattering Spree. When this trigger resolves, the replicate copies will be put on the stack and you will choose a target for each of them. The flagbearer ability will trigger for each of these copies that goes on the stack. When these triggered abilities resolve, you will have to change the target of each copy so it targets a Flagbearer.
