Ask the Judge, 10/29/2008
Rules Tip of the Day: The converted mana cost of most tokens is zero. The only exceptions are token creatures that are copies of other cards. These creatures will have the same converted mana cost as the object they are copying.
Q: Is there a Legend-like rule for mythic rares? If there are two copies of Lich's Mirror in play, will they both go to the graveyard?
A: No. Lich's Mirror is not a legendary permanent. Many mythic cards are Legendary, but not all. There can be any number of Lich's Mirrors in play at one time.
Q: If I play Momentary Blink on a Realm Razer, is it correct that his triggered abilties will stack such that, upon resolution of the Blink, we first remove all lands from play, and then return them?
A: It is up to you. When Momentary Blink resolves, the Realm Razer will leave play and reenter play. Both of its abilities will trigger during this resolution. As you are the controller of the Razor you can determine the order that these two triggered abilities go on the stack, and therefore the order that they resolve. It does not matter that the Razer actually left play before returning to play; both of these abilities will go on the stack after Momentary Blink has resolved.
Q: When my opponent plays Cruel Ultimatum targeting me, can I play Swerve or Wild Ricochet and redirect the Cruel Ultimatum to him?
A: No. Cruel Ultimatum can only target an opponent. As this is a two-player game, you are the only legal target of this Cruel Ultimatum. You can play and resolve Swerve targeting it, but when Swerve resolves, you will not be able to change the target of this spell.
Q: If I have Hostility in play and I play Soul's Fire, choosing Hostility, do I get six 3/1 tokens?
A: No; your opponent will be dealt six points of damage. Hostility's ability only changes when happens when a spell you control would deal damage to an opponent. Soul's Fire has the targeted creature you control deal damage; the Soul's Fire itself does not deal any damage.
Q: If five 1/1 creatures attack me, can I prevent all the damage directed to me if I have a Battletide Alchemist in play?
A: Yes; the ability of Battletide Alchemist will prevent one point of damage from each attacking creature.
Q: I have a Deathbringer Liege and a Scuttlemutt in play. My opponent has a Chameleon Colossus in play. During my main phase, I activate Scuttlemutt's second ability, targeting my Deathbringer Liege to make it green. Then I play a Nightsky Mimic (or any black and white spell). Using the Deathbringer Liege's triggered abilities, can I now target the Chameleon Colossus to tap and destroy it, since the source of those two triggered effects is now green?
A: Yes, that works. When these two triggered abilities go on the stack, Deathbringer Liege is a green permanent, so you can target the Colossus with its abilities.
Q: If I have a Stuffy Doll and a Mizzium Transreliquat in play and I use the Mizzium copy ability on the Stuffy Doll, will the Mizzium have the same target that the Doll had, or no target, because it didn't come into play?
A: This copy Stuffy Doll will not have a player chosen. If this copy receives damage, then it will not be able to deal damage anywhere.
Q: I have Scion of the Ur-Dragon in play and couple of Dragons in my library: Vampiric Dragon and Scourge of Kher Ridges. I decide to use Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability to put Scourge of Kher Ridges into my graveyard and copy it, then use its ability to deal two damage to each creature without flying and use Scion's ability again to put Vampiric Dragon in the graveyard and copy it to put counters on the Scion. Does this work?
A: No. Once the Scion becomes a copy of a Dragon, it will lose its own ability and will not be able to become a copy of a different Dragon. To get the result you want, you'd have to activate the Scion's ability once and let it resolve, puting the Scourge in your graveyard, then activate the ability of this Scourge. Then, before any of these activations resolved, you'd want the Scion to become a copy of the Vampiric Dragon. However, you cannot use the Scion's ability at this point, as it no longer has that ability.
Q: I had a Herald of Leshrac in play and I took one of my opponent's lands. In response, he returned that land to his hand with Boomerang. Do I get the chance to take another land, or do I have to sacrifice Herald of Leshrac?
A: Herald of Leshrac's ability does not target. When its cumulative upkeep ability resolves, you choose the appropriate number of lands to take control of. This cannot be responded to. Your opponent can either choose to return a land to his hand before or after this ability resolves, but he can't stop you from resolving this ability by returning the land he chooses to his hand. If he played Boomerang after you took control of his land, then nothing much will happen.
