Rules Tip of the Day: If a targeted triggered ability triggers and there is not a legal target to choose, the ability will leave the stack without doing anything.
Q: I understand that Tezzeret the Seeker can tutor up Sigil of Distinction, but the Sigil will come into play with 0 counters on it. Does this situation change in any way if I have Etherium Sculptors in play? For example: I have four copies of Etherium Sculptors in play, and use Tezzeret to search out the Sigil Of Distiction. Factoring in the cost-lowering ability of the Sculptors, how many counters will the Sigil have on it when it comes into play?
A: The Sigil will come into play with zero charge counters on it. Its converted mana cost is zero when in any zone other than the stack, so you can search for it with Tezzeret's ability. However, you are not playing this spell, so it enters play with zero counters. The Etherium Sculptor's ability does not interact at all in this situation for the same reason: you are not playing this Sigil as a spell.
Q: If player A has Godhead of Awe in play and player B has a Mighty Emergence, will B's 5-power creatures come into play and trigger Mighty Emergence?
A: No, creatures with a normal power of 5/5 will enter play as 1/1s and will not trigger Mighty Emergence's ability. An exception would be if a creature were to enter play with four or more +1/+1 counters on it, as the effect from counters are applied after all effects that set power and toughness.
Q: If I use Sedris, the Traitor King's ability to unearth a Broodmate Dragon, will the Dragon token have haste and be sacrificed at end of turn or not?
A: No, the token copy will not have haste, and it will not be sacrificed at the end of the turn. The 'original' Broodmate Dragon is played via unearth, but the token that is put into play by the Dragon's triggered ability was not. Because of this, it will not have haste or be sacrificed.
Q: I have Cradle of Vitality and five 1/1 creatures with lifelink in play. All the creatures deal combat damage at the same time. Can I pay the cost once to put five +1/+1 counters on a creature, or do I have to pay the cost once for each creature?
A: You will have to pay 1W for each of these creatures, as each cause you to gain life in a separate event. When these five creatures deal damage, their lifelink abilities will all trigger. These five abilities will go on the stack at the same time, but each of these abilities will resolve one at a time. When each one does, you will gain life and the ability of Cradle of Vitality will trigger. This new Cradle trigger will go on the stack on top of the remaining lifelink triggers. When this trigger resolves, you can pay 1W to put one +1/+1 counter on the targeted creature. In the end you will have to pay 5WWWWW to put five +1/+1 countesr on creatures you control.
Q: I have a Cinder Pyromancer in play and a Burn Trail in hand. If I tap the Pyromancer to deal a point of damage to my opponent, and then play Burn Trail with conspire, would the Pyromancer's effect go off once more or twice?
A: The Pyromancer's ability will just trigger once, as you are only playing one spell. The conspire copy is not played; it is put on the stack without being played when the conspire triggered ability resolves.
Q: What happens when I use Deathrender to play a Kodama of the North Tree or a Simic Skyswallower? The Deathrender should let me put the card into play, but once the cards are in play, they can't the target of spells or abilities and yet they come in to play attached to the Deathrender. Can I simply not choose those creatures?
A: No, you can, and Deathrender will be attached to them. The equip ability does target, but Deathrender's triggered ability does not. A creature with shroud can be put into play via Deathrender's triggered ability and have Deathrender attached to it.
Q: I have a face-down Exalted Angel with a Rancor and my opponent has an untapped Pristine Angel. I attack, and the Pristine Angel blocks. I choose to assign four damage while the Exalted Angel is face-down, and after assigning it I flip the Exalted Angel. Does the Pristine Angel die for the damage I assigned when was face-down, or is the damage considered white because when the damage resolves the source is white?
A: Combat damage looks at the source of the damage as it currently exists. When combat damage resolves in this instance, the creature that assigned damage is white, so it will be prevented by Pristine Angel's ability. It does not matter that the creature doing this damage did not have any color when combat damage went on the stack.
Q: I have Confusion in the Ranks in play and I play Norin the Wary. If my opponent plays a spell and Norin leaves play, would I be able to swap him for another of my opponent's creatures when Norin comes back at the end of turn?
A: Yes, as it returns to play under its owner's control when its delayed triggered ability resolves.
