Ask The Judge - 09/27/01
Q: My opponent has out the Abyss, and during my upkeep I have a Meddling Mage and a Paladin en-Vec. Can I choose to have it target my Paladin and have the Abyss's effect countered, or do I have to target my mage and kill it?
A: The Paladin has protection from black, so you can't target it with a black ability. You have to target your Mage. Q: Can I prevent Underworld Dreams' damage effect with a Circle Of Protection: Black? If so, if my opponent plays a Timetwister, do I have to pay one mana to prevent each damage from the cards drawn, or can I pay for the damage all at once from Underworld? A: One for each. The Underworld Dreams triggers seven different times after Timetwister.Q: My opponent drops a Blazing Specter and attacks. I respond by tapping four mana and casting Captain's Maneuver and redirect the damage to my opponent. Is this considered combat damage dealt by the Specter? Should my opponent discard a card? If I only used the Maneuver to redirect one point of damage, would we each have to discard a card?
Thanks,
Michael
A: The damage is still Specter damage. If you redirect all the damage to your opponent, he discards. If both of you get damaged, both of you discard.
Q: If I have no blue or red creatures in my graveyard and I play a Crypt Angel, what happens? I think that the Angel comes into play and its effect does nothing, but an opponent of mine thought that the Angel couldn't be played without a legal target. So what actually happens? Can the Angel not come into play without a legal target?
A: You may play the Angel without a red or blue creature in your graveyard because the target is not part of playing the Angel, but part of the triggered ability when the Angel comes into play.
