Ask The Judge - 10/03/01

Q: I have an Academy Rector in play. My opponent plays a kickered Urza's Rage, obviously targeting me. In response to that, I somehow sacrifice my Rector (with a Phyrexian Tower, a Phyrexian Ghoul, etc) and activate the Rector's ability, putting an Ivory Mask into play. What happens with the Rage? And what happens if I look for a Worship (with a creature in play, of course)?

Another question: If I'm playing with Undiscovered Paradise, and my opponent plays Sands of Time, could I get the Paradise back into my hand after using it? Or not?

Thank you very much for your help.

Regards,
Ricardo

A: Ricardo,

Ivory Mask: The Rage will be countered by a game rule (413.2a)

Worship: Your life will be one. Worship doesn't prevent damage, it changes what damage does to your life total.

As to your second question, the answer is no, because the Paradise comes back during the Untap Step, and Sands of Time makes you skip it.

Say hello to all my friends in Argentina,

Sheldon

Q: I'm just gonna jump right in, heres the question; Lets say I have a Chill and a Vodalian Mystic in play. My opponent then plays a Last Caress. I tap my Vodalian Mystic and make Last Caress red, would it then cost two more because of the Chill?

Just as an example, could this involve any Chill like spell and the Mystic, thus affecting any kind of instant or sorcery? I'm rather curious if it can be used in this manner.

Thanks for your time,
Todd H.

A: Todd,

It can't. Once the spell is announced and paid for, changing its color won't make the player go back and pay more. The cost of the spell is determined during announcement and doesn't change (409.1f).

Q: Going from memory, but isn't Frenetic Efreet's ability something like:

0: Flip a coin, if heads, phase FE out, if tail, kill FE?

With a Chance Encounter on the table, couldn't you just line about a hundred coin flips up (virtually ensuring the Efreet's death and your victory) if you can live through to (and protect the Chance Encounter) your next upkeep?

Or do either of these cards work differently or have errata?

A: Here's the text of the Efreet:

Frenetic Efreet:

{0}: If ~this~ is in play, flip a coin. If you win the flip, ~this~ phases out. If you lose the flip, sacrifice ~this~.

You flip the coin on resolution. Once you lose a flip and sacrifice the Efreet, you don't flip any more. That means that this"combo" doesn't work.

Q: Here's a hypothetical situation for you. Suppose my opponent and I are both at three life. My opponent casts an Arc Lightning at my head for a apparent win, only to have me send it back at him via Misdirection. Perfectly legal. However, could my opponent have targeted himself with the Arc Lightning for zero points of damage in addition to targeting me for the three points? Since Misdirection can only target spells with one target, I would be unable to misdirect the Arc Lightning. Is this legal or no?

A: No. Zero is not a valid choice. If something's being divided, each target must receive at least one of what's being divided (409.1e).
