BOOM!
I would like to write this in response to William Mistretta's letter, who opposes what Mark Rosewater said in his article about flavor text.
In your letter, William, you mentioned:
"Honestly, we hate it. I hate to have to be the one to tell you this, but we hate your storylines and flavor text. Maybe your time in the ivory tower of Magic R&D has isolated you from this..."
Who's the"we" that you're talking about? It most certainly doesn't include me...
Every Sunday, I play in a Type 1 tournament over at Area 51 in downtown Cortland. A few weeks after each expansion is released, there is a Sealed Deck tournament with that expansion. We all noticed the change in flavor text in 7th edition. Joe A. played a Fear on one of his creatures against Adam - and whenever he attacked, he yelled out"Booga Booga Booga!"
I guess this unnerved Adam a bit; I don't know. But all I know now is"Booga Booga Booga" - a real-life joke which came out of a joke on a card. Whenever I attack with a Fear creature like Finkel, I am thinking it or yelling it out - and I smile.
Or for one other example is when I'm playing my artifact deck, and the Magma Mine has piled up the counters ready to explode, it goes"BOOM!" according to the flavor text. So I have to yell out"BOOM!"
It's little things like that that makes the game more enjoyable. If games are supposed to relax and be fun, what's the sense of it being serious?
Thanx,
Dana Jacobs
