Q: I have a question that may be rhetorical, but as a long-time player it has been truly disturbing me.
For the first time last week, I ran into someone playing the"Trix" deck - a counter deck (which is fine) that uses the following combo:
1. Cast"Illusions of Grandeur." Gain 20 life.
2. Cast"Donate" to hand over to opponent. Once the upkeep can't be paid, they lose 20 life (which is often game).
I find it unfathomable that I could be the only person who believes this combo is just wrong.
Two questions:
1. Why doesn't the Donate trigger the"leaves play" for the Illusions or the"comes into play" for the opponent?
2. Why hasn't an errata been done to"fix" this combo or restrict it altogether? (I understand that this was a legal deck for Extended.)
Best Regards,
Charles McCormick
A: Wrong? Personally, I don't have any problems with moral issues here - but who am I to judge?
Illusions doesn't trigger when it changes controllers because none of its conditions are met. It doesn't leave play and then come into play for the other player; it just changes controllers.
It hasn't been fixed because the DCI doesn't see a need to fix it. It's a good deck, originally designed by my friend Michelle Bush, but it's not so rampant that it needs to be banned; when you think bannings, think Necropotence. With the new rotation in Extended, it's going to lose some of its steam (since Illusions will no longer be legal, and Delusions of Mediocrity just doesn't cut the mustard) anyway.
Best regards,
Sheldon
