Ask The New Judge 06-14-2002
Q: Can you use cards like Accumulated Knowledge, or Attunement when cards like Solitary Confinement or Ivory Mask are in play - or are they non-targeting?
A: Cards are only targeted when they actually use the word"target" in their rules text. Spells like Accumulated Knowledge or the ability of Attunement do not use the word target, so they can be played with Ivory Mask or Solitary Confinement in play. Cards like Deep Analysis ("Target player draws two cards") or Cephalid Looter ("Target player draws a card, then discards a card") will not.
Q: If I cast the Living Wish and then Spelljack it, does that mean I now have infinite copies of the Wish?
- Ethan
A: Hi Ethan,
Actually the way it works is slightly different. When you play the card that you countered with the Spelljack, you put it on the stack like any other spell you play. By doing that, the spell is no longer in the"removed from the game"-zone but in the"stack"-zone. When a card changes zones and later ends up in the same zone again, it's technically a different card; therefore, the ability of the Spelljack won't aply to it.

Q: Thanks for your availability to answer questions. I faced a question at our last local tournament that I wasn't sure of.
If a player has a Megrim out, and casts a spell (such as Wheel of Fortune) that forces the opponent to discard multiple cards at once, is the damage dealt in one packet or separately for each card discarded? If the opponent had a Circle of Protection: Black out, would he have to pay the activation cost just once or once for every card discarded? Would the answer be the same for Pestilence instead of Megrim?
Thanks again for your time!
- Sy
A: Hi Sy,
I am glad I can help out people, other than just being available at a tournament now and then.
Abilities like Megrim are triggered abilities. Each time the ability triggers, it has one entry that will eventually go on the stack. They will also resolve individually, so yes - you have to activate a COP: black for each card you discard.
With Pestilence, you have to activate Pestilence's ability - and each time you do that, you will create a new entry on the stack, so you'll have to spend the same amount of mana on a COP: Black as you spend on the Pestilence.
Hope this makes things clear,

Q: Can I use the lands I put into play via Manabond to pay for madness costs on cards that I discarded because of Manabond? Thanks!
A: Cool idea! And it actually works, too; you reveal your hand and put all lands in play and discard your hand. Then you choose to remove all madness cards from the game and are able to play them one by one. The Manabond ability has resolved by then, and you can use the lands you put into play using that ability.
Have fun with that little combo!

Q: What happens if I play the Wormfang Manta, followed by a Time Walk - or the other way around?
Thanks,
Jim Mc.
A: The order in which you play them is not relevant. You end up skipping the Time Walk turn because that is the next turn you would take.
