Q: Sylvan Library. I draw two cards, put them back, then I get my normal draw? The people I play with - mostly in 5 color - have drawn three and put back two. Have we all been screwing this up?
A: There is a special rule for the draw step: First, all"at the beginning of your draw step" triggered abilities are put on the stack, and lastly your regular draw. Thus, the regular draw resolves first, then the ability of the Sylvan would resolve. As you can put back two cards drawn this turn, you could also put back the card you drew regularly. Drawing three and putting back two is a commonly-accepted shortcut.
Q: With Elder Druid, it says you can pay mana to untap any artifact, creature, or land. Does this mean that if you attack with a creature, then pay the Elder Druid's ability cost, you can untap that same creature and attack again with it?
A: No. You can only declare one attack per turn and each creature can only be declared as an attacker once in each combat phase. If you somehow create more than one combat phase during a turn, this would work.
Q: If I bring Ward Sliver into play and then use its ability to choose white the card's color type - and then play another Ward Sliver and choose black, will all slivers be covered by both colors, or only the second choice?
A: Yes. All slivers will have protection from both white and black.
Q: If an opponent casts Engineered Plague, can it damage the Slivers, even though the Slivers have protection from black?
A: Yes. Engineered Plague doesn't deal damage to the Slivers; it just affects them. It isn't targeted, so protection doesn't work.
Q: If I have four Bomb Squads in play and place a fuse counter on each of four different creatures at the end of my opponents turn, how much damage does he take during my upkeep? Since each of the bomb squads have the triggered ability, and all triggered abilities resolve at the same time, my guess would be that my opponent would get dealt 64 points of damage. Can you confirm this?
A: Yes. There are four creatures; each Squad will deal four damage for each creature, and as there are four Squads that's 4x4x4 = 64.
Q: If you tap Lake of the Dead and sacrifice a swamp to get four more. Can you sacrifice more than one swamp and get more land?
A: No. You can only use it once each turn unless you can find a way to untap it. You need to tap it to use it, and you can only sacrifice one swamp every time you use the ability.
Q: If Phyrexian Negator is blocked by a White Knight, will you have to sacrifice permanents before the Negator deals damage?
A: Yes. First Strike damage resolves before the regular damage is put on the stack.
Q: If you use Mortuary and Grave Pact with a Lord of the Pit and a Bog Imp, can you keep sacrificing, bringing it back out, and repeating the process without taking the seven damage?
A: Yes. The Mortuary will return the Imp to the top of your library each turn.
Q: I have a Mana Web and thought that it was an awesome card, but I heard it isn't quite that great.
I would think that if I had a Mana Web on the field and my opponent taps a forest, he would have to tap all forests, but I heard somewhere that that doesn't work. Can you please explain to me what it really does? I'd hate to see a good card go bad.
A: When a player taps a Forest, Mana web will trigger. When the triggered ability resolves, it will tap all green producing lands (not just Forest; it could also tap a City of Brass). The opponent can respond to this trigger by tapping more lands for mana.
Q: My opponent has a Wormfang Manta with Vanishing enchanting it. At the end of his turn, he Phases his creature out every turn, taking another free one. My question is this: Does he keep getting free turns, even after the Manta Phases back in?
A: Yes. Phasing in doesn't trigger"comes into play" abilities, but phasing out does trigger"leaves play" abilities. It not very logical... But then again, phasing isn't logical at all.
Q: If I have a Crystalline Sliver in play, can I play a Crypt Sliver to use the"tap to Regenerate target sliver" ability?
A: No. Because of the Crystalline, slivers can't be targeted - so the Crypt sliver is pretty useless, other than being another sliver.
Q: If you have a Mana Flare and a Vernal Bloom out and you put out a Taiga, out does it get pumped by both the Vernal Bloom and the Mana Flare? And does it get pumped two times for the Mana Flare since it is a forest and mountain?
A: The amount of mana a Taiga produces with both Vernal Bloom and a Mana Flare out is fixed at three. If you tap the Taiga for green, you will get three green mana, and if you tap it for red you will get two red and one green mana.
Q: If I have a Steely Resolve out and set to Elves, can my opponent use an Animate Dead to take a Heedless One, Wellwisher, or any other Elf out of my graveyard and into play? More generally, is an Elf still an Elf if it's in the graveyard, or is it a dead creature card?
A: It's still an elf; it is, however, no longer a creature. It is a creature card, and therefore not protected by the Steely Resolve so it is a legal target for the Animate Dead.
Q: I was wondering about the spell Raze in which it states"at the time of play, sacrifice a land" does this mean that I could play this spell, then use Havenwood Battleground to sacrifice that land before the spell Raze resolves, thus getting the two green mana from Battleground?
A: No. You need to sacrifice a land as part of the cost for the Raze; you can't also sacrifice that land to pay other costs.
Q: Can I sacrifice a Threatened Ravenous Baloth? And if so, who's graveyard would it go to? Would this stay the same at the end of turn, or would it be returned to play for the player I stole it from?
A: Yes. You can sacrifice the Baloth if you control it for whatever reason. It will go to it's owner's graveyard. It will never get returned to play if it is sacrificed. This will always have the same outcome no matter when you play it.
Q: Does Noxious Ghoul's ability affect a creature with protection from black?
A: Yes. It isn't targeted, so it affects all creatures even if they have protection.
Q: Does Grotesque Hybrid's ability affect a creature with protection from black?
A: The Hybrid's ability is not targeted; protection won't help.
Q: Say you have an Elephant Guide on Riptide Mangler, making it a 3/6, and you activate the ability, targeting a 1/1. What happens? It can't become a 1/6, right? Doesn't it have to have at least three power from the enchantment?
A: The enchantment only gets applied once to the Mangler. If you later alter its power, the enchantment can't alter it in any way. It will become 1/6.
Q: What if the target creature is removed from play when Riptide Mangler targets it - does it fizzle or get zero?
A: The ability is countered on resolution because it's target is illegal.
Q: I have a question about Astral Slide. Is it possible to target creatures in your graveyard? If so, won't they come back in to play when they come back at end of my turn?
A: No. Astral Slide can only target creatures. Something can only be a creature in play; if it is in another zone it is a creature card, which can't be targeted by the Slide.
