Ask The Judge, 05/05/2003
Q: If you have two Noble Purposes on the board, do they stack when my creatures deal combat damage, thus gaining double life from the damage they deal?
A: Yes. Each triggers whenever one of your creatures deals combat damage.
Q: If my opponent plays a Root Sliver, can I Counterspell it or not?
A: Root Sliver is a valid target for a Counterspell, but the Counterspell won't have any effect.
Q: I was reading responses for other Phantom questions and it skimmed over my question. Is it true that whenever damage is dealt to a phantom, I have no choice but to remove a counter? My friend worded it as,"if it's about to die with damage, I reserve the choice to remove a counter" - but what if it's not life threatening to the creature? Does it still have to?
A: Whenever damage of any amount is going to be dealt to the Phantom, the damage is prevented and a counter is removed instead. There is no choice to make.
Q: When announcing the spell Kaboom!, must I denote a rise in my voice as the exclamation point printed in the card's name implies? Just a half-joke question...but I would like an answer.
A: Only if it resolves.
Then, you must ask, in a normal voice,"May I have permission to scream 'Kaboom!' at an annoyingly loud volume?"
If your opponent says yes, THEN you can go"KABOOM!"
Q: I understand that when a face-down creature leaves play it gets returned to play face-up. My question is if I use the Planar Guide's ability and remove an Imperial Hellkite from the game, when it comes back, will I be able to search for a dragon card?
A: No. Returning it to play isn't the same as turning it face it. The only way to trigger its ability is to have it face down, and then pay its Morph cost.
Q: If I use Belbe's Portal to bring in a Nesting Wurm, do I still get to search for the other copies?
A: Yes. Unless they specifically say otherwise, like Hypnox, creatures will trigger their comes-into-play abilities regardless of how they come into play.
Q: I was playing a sliver deck with a Magma Sliver and four other slivers in play. In response to my tapping of one sliver to target another, my opponent plays fast effects and sends two Slivers to the graveyard, leaving three in play. Does the target Sliver get +5/+0 or +3/+0? And can you explain how this works with the stack?
A: +3/+0. The ability counts the number of Slivers in play on resolution.
Q: Let's say that I have five goblins in play, a Mirari, and four mountains all untapped. In my main, I cast a Brightstone Ritual and tap three more mountains to activate the Mirari's ability, putting a copy of the spell on the stack. Now, can I let the copy resolve first, giving me five red mana, and use the Mirari to copy the original spell again? Or does the whole stack resolve at once?
A: With Mirari, the copy always resolves first, because it goes on the stack after the original spell. You can only copy the spell once, because Mirari only triggers once for each spell played.
Q: Say my opponent has a Phage the Untouchable on the table. I have no intention of blocking her, as I play a Mirror Strike from my hand. What happens? Do I lose since Phage was unblocked, or does the controller of Phage lose since the damage is dealt to him/her?
A: The controller of Phage loses because Phage deals damage to him instead. Phage triggers on damage, not being unblocked.
Q: Say I have a Verdant Succession in play, along with three elves. My opponent then plays Nevinyrral's Disk and pops it. I thought that since everything goes into the graveyard at the same time, the Succession wouldn't trigger for my elves - but I'm not totally sure how that works.
A: The Succession will see the Elves go to the graveyard at the same time it does, and will trigger (rule 410.10d).
Q: Generally, what is the difference between"comes into play" effects and"when played" effects. Specifically, if I have a Verdant Succession in play and my opponent has Titania's Chosen in play, do cards put into play by the Verdant Succession's ability trigger a counter for Titania's Chosen?
A: "When played" triggers when a spell is announced."Comes into play" triggers are the result of a permanent entering the In Play Zone. Comes into play triggers going on the stack do not trigger"when played" abilities, so your answer is no.
Q: If I have a Kilnmouth Dragon in the graveyard and I Zombify it, can I still reveal dragon cards in my hand for amplify?
A: Yes. You do so as part of the resolution of whatever event puts the Kilnmouth into play.
