Q: Can Land Grant and Tithe go get dual lands? I'm reasonably sure Land Grant can; I'm not so sure about Tithe.
A: Both can so long as the dual land is (with Tithe) Plains or (with Land Grant) Forest. Neither says"basic."
Q: I'm making a deck that, when it goes off, it nets me life for as long as I feel like doing the mini-combo.
In a tourney, though,"infinite" is impossible - I'd have to do it a set time. For the sake of explaining my question, let's say I gain"only" 9,000,000,000 life.
Is there any way, rules-wise, I can say"Unless you have an alternate way of killing me, you trying to whittle down 9,000,000,000 life will conceptually go on forever, so you should concede"?
I know it's a bit silly to ask (in that one of us would eventually deck each other first), but in casual play people will concede after someone has reached a"I can't kill him" level, and was wondering if there is some sort of"practical rule" which governs the same thing at tourneys.
I'm desperately failing to figure out something to do with 9,000,000,000 life in a game of Magic!
A: You can't force your opponent to concede, and there are no rules that can force him to do so. If you want to win, you have to win. If you have an impossibly large amount of life, he may want to try to deck you or play for the draw. Just because you can't lose doesn't mean you can win. And, if you can get decked, there's no"I can't kill him" level.
Q: I have Grave Pact in a recursion deck. If there is more than one Pact in play, do all other players sacrifice a creature for each Grave Pact every time one of my creatures go to my graveyard? In other words, does Grave Pact stack?
A: If you have two Grave Pacts and a creature goes to your graveyard, your opponent will sacrifice two creatures; each Grave Pact will trigger.
Q: I control a Rotlung Reanimator. My opponent controls an Undead Warchief and a Withered Wretch. Infest is played. Do I get one zombie token or two?
I realize that the first time state-based effects are checked, the Reanimator and Warchief die. Then, they are checked again and the Withered Wretch dies. This would seem to imply that I only get one token, but state-based effects and triggered abilities being what they are, I thought I'd make sure.
A: You get two.
Infest resolves.
Everyone gets -2/-2.
Check SBEs, put Warchief in 'yard.
Check SBEs again, put Rotlung and Wretch in 'yard. Rotlung triggers twice.
Q: If I have a Mortuary out, and I also have Kormus Bell, could I sacrifice the swamps as upkeep for Infernal Denizen, and have them go to the top of my library?
They aren't tokens, so I figured they weren't destroyed.
A: You're correct; they aren't tokens. Mortuary saw them as creatures when they left play, so its triggered ability will put them on top of your library. It doesn't care that they're not creature cards.
Q: I have a U/G/B Raven Guild Master Deck. I was playing my friend and I play an Alpha Status on my Raven Guild Master. There are four Wizards in play besides Raven Guild Master. Does my Guild Master get +8/+8 because of the wizards, or does it get +0/+0 because there are no Wizard Mutants in play besides him?
A: It gets +8/+8. Alpha Status looks to see if a) it's a Wizard, b) it's a Mutant, or c) it's a Wizard AND a mutant.
Q: I'm just wondering if the"For each card drawn this way, discard a card from your hand unless you sacrifice a permanent" effect of Read the Runes can be countered by Stifle. I know triggered affects are indicated by when, if etc... thanks for the help.
A: No, it's not an activated or triggered ability; it's just part of the spell.
Q: I was wondering whether I can Stifle the life-gaining part of that annoying spell called Corrupt. Can you enlighten me (and my day) ?
A: No, you cannot. The life-gaining part of Corrupt is just part of the spell, it's not an activated or triggered ability.
Q: Just wondering if Stifle could counter Wrath of God's effect. Sorry, I'm still a little confused about Stifle.
A: No. Stifle can counter an activated ability (like that of Prodigal Sorcerer) or a triggered ability (like that of Flametongue Kavu). Wrath of God is a spell, not an ability.
Q: This was really crazy; it involves Broodhatch Nantuko's ability. In this case, I was attacking with a freaking huge creature, a an 11/14 Forgotten Ancient with no other abilities on him other than Spirit Link. He declared the Broodhatch Nantuko (1/1) a blocker, and then put eleven Insect tokens into play.
I argued that, since the Nantuko could only absorb one damage before dying, he should only put one insect token into play. Magic doesn't have creatures doing ten damage to a dead corpse, after all, does it? And, for that matter, I should only be able to add one life because of Spirit Link, because he only dealt one damage.
A: Your opponent was correct. It doesn't matter how small the blocking creature is, the eleven-power Ancient is dealing eleven points of damage to it (and then you'd gain eleven life). There is no"absorbing" of damage.
The only thing that would change this is if the Ancient had trample. Then, you'd assign only one to the Nantuko and ten to the defending player. You'd still gain eleven, but he'd get only one insect.
Q: I just want to confirm I'm correct on this. I have a Riptide Mangler in play, then cast a Phyrexian Dreadnought. I can then put the Dreadnought's sacrifice on the stack and activate the Mauler targeting the Dreadnought, making the Mangler's power twelve, then sac the Mangler to the Dreadnought, correct?
A: No, you're not. The Dreadnought's ability isn't a coming-into-play triggered ability, and it doesn't use the stack. It's a replacement ability that happens as part of the resolution of the spell or ability that puts the Dreadnought into play. You don't get priority to activate the Mangler until after you deal with the Dreadnought's"sacrifice or not" clause.
Q: I was wondering what happens when you play Underworld Dreams in a group game.
A: You get ganged up on very quickly. Underworld Dreams affects each of your opponents.
Q: I have a deck with both Transcedence and Sulfuric Vortex, basically making me invincible till one leaves play. If I have fifteen life with both of the enchantments out and I play Phyrexian Processor, can I only pay fifteen life, which would put me at zero (but I wouldn't lose due to the combo) or could I pay more and go into negative numbers?
A: You can't pay life (or mana, or any resource) that you don't have. You can pay fifteen, no more.
Q: If you have two or more Force Bubbles in play, can you distribute counters for damage dealt to you among them as you choose, or does every point of damage taken require a counter to be put on all Force Bubbles in play?
A: All the damage you take at once must be put on one Force Bubble or the other. If someone Lightning Bolts you, you can put three on either, but not one on the first and two on the second. The next time he Lightning Bolts you, you can put the three on the one you didn't put any counters on the first time.
Q: Can the mana generated by Thran Turbine be used to cycle a spell? Or is cycling a spell itself?
A: Cycling is an activated ability. You can use Turbine mana.
Q: I have an Ambush Commander in play. I attack with four forests. My opponent assigns various blocks and combat damage gets put on the stack. If I now pay 1G and sacrifice my Ambush Commander to give an arbitrary creature +3/+3; what happens to my Forests now that they are no longer creatures?
Are they removed from combat? What happens to the damage assigned to the Forests - can they still die? What about the damage assigned by the Forests; I assume that gets dealt as normal?
A: As soon as the Ambush Commander leaves play, the lands stop being creatures and are removed from combat (Glossary"Attacking Creature" and Rule 308). The damage that was supposed to go to the lands isn't dealt (rule 310.4), but the damage the lands assigned is.
Q: My opponent has three slivers in play and I have an Aether Flash. I play a second Aether Flash and then on his turn he plays Crypt Sliver. What happens? Can he regenerate Crypt Sliver by tapping one of the other slivers, or is it too late to save the Crypt Sliver?
A: Yes, he can regenerate it. Each Aether Flash triggers separately. When they go on the stack, he can activate one of the other Slivers to save it from the first Aether Flash, and then another to save it from the second.
Q: If I play Humility and then I play Knighthood, does Knighthood's ability resolve?
A: Yes. Humility is not a counterspell.
I think what you're asking, though, is how to apply the two continuous effects. Since neither of these depends on each other, you apply them in the order in which they came into play (also called"timestamp" order). First, the Humility takes away all creatures' abilities. Then, Knighthood gives your creatures First Strike. If you had played the Knighthood first, then Humility would remove First Strike.
Q: If I cast Final Fortune and cast another Final Fortune on that extra turn, do I lose the game after the first or the second extra turn? Do I get two extra turns if I cast it twice in the same turn?
A: 1. You lose at the end of the first extra turn you take. 2. You get two extra turns, but you'll never take the second because you'll lose at the end of the first.
Q: Me and my grandfather are playing Magic: The Gathering Collectible Trading Card Game. I decide to play a Chain of Vapor and return his Wild Mongrel to his hand. He precedes to sacrifice a land, and chooses his new target as my Mirari. And then I sacrificed one of my lands to choose a new target. My grandfather says I can't do this, because it is an activated ability. But I say I can, because he copied the whole spell entirely, including the bottom part, where I can sac a land and choose a new target. Help us Magic: The Gathering Collectible Trading Card Game players out.
A: Your grandfather was wrong. The entire Chain spell is copied, so you can chain it back and forth multiple times. What would have been loads of fun is if you had copied the Chain of Vapor with your Mirari.
Q: My question is if my opponent has Ichneumon Druid in play and I play Scattershot after I've cast four spells this turn, how much damage would I take - four or twenty?
A: You only take four. It only counts spells played, and Storm copies aren't played.
Q: I have a Vile Deacon and Ensnaring Bridge in play. Does the Bridge see the Deacon as a 2/2 when it attacks, and then the Deacon gets +x/+x for clerics in play or does the Ensnaring Bridge see the deacon as a 2/2 +x/+x creature when it attacks?
A: The Bridge only sees it as a 2/2. You check declare the attackers (rule 308.1), then see if the attack is legal (308.2). Anything that triggers during 308.1 waits to go on the stack until you receive priority (rule 308.6).
Q: My opponent has an Erhnam Djinn in play. I have no creature in play, except a Mishra's Factory.
Can I make my Mishra into an assembly worker during the beginning of his upkeep to force him to give it forestwalk and if so, will the Mishra"remember" this until my turn when I turn it into an assembly worker again?
This happened when my brother and I where playing a very funny Type One game and we both really want to know who won the game...
A: Even though it's meaningless, the Mishra's Factory still would have Forestwalk, if that were the case. When a permanent's type changes, effects (and damage and counters) remain with it (rule 214.4). Unfortunately, the first time any player receives priority during the Djinn's controller's turn, Ernie's triggered ability will be put on the stack - and a target has to be chosen. At that point Mishra can't yet have been activated - nobody receives priority during the untap step - and therefore isn't a legal target for the Ernie's ability.
