Ask The Judge, 08/06/2003

Q: I use Sneak Attack to put Serra Avatar into play and then I Parallax Wave or Astral Slide her out of play. Do I get to keep her if she doesn't come back until the turn is over?

A: Yes, you do. When the creature comes back into play, it has no memory of its former life, so it doesn't know that it's supposed to go away. The game treats it as if it's a brand new creature.

Q: If I change any Mistform into a flagbearer, does it gain the flagbearer ability?

A: No, no more than making it a Bird would give it Flying. Creature types do not automatically impart any abilities.

Q: I have kind of a weird question - not so much about the card game itself, but about the tournament rules. Let's say I'm undefeated heading into the last round of Swiss, and the winner of the game will be seeded #1 in the top 8, while the loser will be #2. I am facing an exact mirror of my deck in the last round. Let's say that somehow, word gets out that the player who will be #8 is playing a deck that is a horrible matchup for both me and my opponent. The #7 player, though, will be our auto-win.

Obviously, my opponent and I both want to concede.

What happens in this situation? Is the game a draw? Is there"priority" to concede?

A: We've ruled in the past that concession doesn't use the stack. The first person to speak up successfully concedes. If you both can't agree to who conceded first (or one of you lies), then there's trouble. The judge will investigate. The person who lied will be caught and DQ'd (someone will have heard, trust me).

If, for some reason, the judge can't determine who conceded first, he'll ask you if either of you want to reconsider because otherwise he'll declare the match a draw (or give you both match losses if you're both being unsportsmanlike).

Q: If I have a Sterling Grove, Opalescence, and some other enchantments in play, can my enchantments be targeted by spells like Swords to Plowshares?

A: No, because they're still enchantments. Sterling Grove doesn't care that they're something else in addition.

Q: I was at five life and my opponent was at one. He Reanimated a Laquatus's Champion. Would I die first, or would he die first? I think he would, but I am unsure.

A: He would lose. He loses the life during the resolution of the Reanimate. He doesn't gain it until the Champion's triggered ability resolves. Although the Champion's ability triggers when it comes into play, it doesn't go on the stack until the Reanimate finishes resolving. When the Reanimate is finished, and before he puts the Champion's trigger on the stack, you check State-Based Effects. He's at zero or less life, so he loses.

Q: I looked up Stifle in the Ask the Judge database, but it does not clarify when you need to Stifle the delayed triggered ability of Astral Slide or Sneak Attack.

For example: I have an Astral Slide in play. My opponent has an Exalted Angel in play, and I want to remove it permanently. It is the end of my opponent's turn (after end of turn effects have gone on the stack) and I cycle a card to remove his Exalted Angel from the game. Normally, it would return at the end of my turn.

When do I need to play the Stifle - at the end of my opponent's turn, or at the end of my turn?

To clarify:

1) Does the cycling trigger the delayed trigger, which can be countered by Stifle immediately?
2) Does it simply set up a delayed trigger which goes on the stack at the end of the next turn automatically (in which case the triggered ability goes on the stack at the end of my turn, and I will need to stifle it before that triggered ability resolves)?

I believe #2 is the correct answer (and this goes on the stack at the end of the turn regardless of whether the Astral Slide is still in play).

A: In order to use Stifle to permanently remove the creature, you have to Stifle the delayed triggered ability when that ability goes on the stack. In the example you cite, the trigger goes on the stack at the end of your turn; Stifle that ability, and the Angel will never return.

Q: Does Sphere of Resistance's effect also work against Mind's Desire? Does my opponent have to pay an additional one for Desired spell?

A: Yes. You still have to pay any additional costs to play the spell. Mind's Desire only pays the mana cost.

Q: I hit my opponent with Trade Secrets. It's supposed to deck him because he has to draw two cards, then I have the choice to draw four. But he can repeat this process as many times as he wants.

Well, the smart guy over there just says he wants to keep repeating over and over and never agrees to stop repeating it... And until the card resolves, he won't get decked, thus stalling the match. Is this the rule, or is a bug on Magic Online?

A: It's bugged, but it's the kind of bug that might be difficult for MODO to fix; a live judge will have to step in. He's correct that he doesn't lose until the Trade Secrets finishes resolving, because he loses as a State-Based Effect, and SBEs aren't checked during the resolution of the spell. However, he can't use that to stall out the game and avoid what would be the natural result: he loses. You'll have to ask the online folks how to fix this one, if it can be fixed at all.

Q: If something calls for the destruction of both Sigil of the New Dawn and one or more of my creatures, like Akroma's Vengeance, can I still save them? Do I choose what order my cards go to the graveyard, or are they all simultaneous?

A: The permanents go to the graveyard simultaneously. The good news is that Sigil of the New Dawn sees the creatures go to the graveyard at the same time that it does, and the Sigil's ability will trigger for each creature. You can pay 1W for whichever you wish to return them to your hand.

Q: I am at two life and my friend is in field goal range at three life. Since he couldn't finish me off, it is now my first main phase. I have a Pyrostatic Pillar in play, and I cast Carbonize to kill him. I planned on stacking them so that the Carbonize would resolve first, killing him before the Pillar's damage killed me - but another player said that wouldn't work and the Pillar would kill me first. While his argument at the time made some sense, I'm still not convinced since I thought I had a choice if two things were to occur at the same time. He also implied that my scheme would have worked if I had tried this at the end of his turn.

A: He was right. The Carbonize goes on the stack first, and then the Pyrostatic Pillar trigger. The trigger resolves first, and you lose before your Carbonize resolves. He was wrong about the last part; it doesn't matter how you played it. The Carbonize will always go on the stack before the Pillar's trigger, because the Pillar can't trigger until after you play the Carbonize.

Q: I'm playing a version of Tight Sight that uses False Memories. If I have less than seven cards in my library and play False Memories, would I lose the match? I would think not, since I'm removing cards rather than drawing cards.

A: You're right. It's not drawing, so you don't lose.

Q: I've been told that there's a way to play a spell like False Memories at the end of an opponent's turn after the"end of turn" effects have resolved so that the cards removed would stay in your graveyard through your turn. Is this a legal play?

A: Sure. After any (if any) end of turn triggers go on the stack, you can play the False Memories. It's too late for EOT triggers to go on the stack now, so the cards won't be removed until the next end of turn.

Q: I have a Broodhatch Nantuko and an Emperor Crocodile in play and I cast Wildfire. Will the insect tokens come into play before the Broodhatch leaves play, therefore preventing me from having to sacrifice the Emperor Crocodile?

A: No. You'll still have to sacrifice the Crocodile. The Crocodile's ability is called a"state-triggered" ability (not to be confused with State-Based Effects). State-triggered abilities don't recheck their condition; once the condition is met, the ability will trigger, go on the stack at the next opportunity, and resolve (rule 410.11).

Q: If I use a Demonic Consultation to search for the only copy of a card in my deck and It is removed from the game with the first six cards, what happens? Do I continue to reveal my whole deck until I have no cards left, or can I stop the ability whenever I want to?

A: No, you can't stop when you want to. Even if you know the card's not in your deck, Demonic Consultation doesn't know, so it will keep searching until the end. You'll lose next turn (or the next time) when you have to draw a card.

Q: What happens if Angel's Trumpet is in play and I just summoned a creature? Does it matter if I'm unable to attack? I believe that Angel's Trumpet deals damage and taps every creature that didn't attack, no matter what - am I right?

A: Your belief is correct; it doesn't matter why the creature didn't attack.
