Q: I have a 2/2 non-Black creature with a Skullclamp attached, which makes it a 3/1 creature. If my opponent casts Murderous Spoils on my creature, who draws the 2 cards?
A: You do. It was destroyed when it was Equipping a creature you controlled. Gaining control of the Skullclamp happens after the Skullclamp ability triggers, although it happens before the trigger goes on the stack, because it can't go on the stack until after the Murderous Spoils finishes resolving.
Q: Lets say I had an Auriok Glaivemaster equipped with Sword of Fire and Ice and a Leonin Shikari in play. If I attack with both of them and they're unblocked, can I deal 4 first strike damage, draw a card, and deal two damage from the Sword of Fire and Ice abilities, then move the Sword onto the Leonin Shikari and deal 4 damage, draw a card, and deal 2 damage from the ability, all in the same combat phase?
A: You sure can. After the triggered abilities resolve in the First Strike Combat Damage Step, players get priority. The damage assigned in the regular Combat Damage Step will be based on whatever the power of the Shikari is at that time.
Q: My question is about Reincarnation (from Legends):
Since it only stipulates that this effect is triggered when"that creature is put into a graveyard this turn," does that mean you could, for instance, sacrifice the targeted creature to a Fallen Angel, and then return it to play an arbitrarily large number of times?
A: No. Once"that creature" leaves play, it's a new version if it comes back later. It has no memory of the Reincarnation effect that used to be on it.
Q: What happens when you play a Worldgorger Dragon with a Portcullis in play (with two or more creatures already in play)?
A: Depends on who controls the Portcullis.
If your opponent controls it, the Dragon's trigger goes on the stack first, and then the Portcullis. The Portcullis removes the Dragon from play, triggering its leaves-play ability. There will be nothing to return, and then the Dragon's coming-into-play ability will resolves, removing all your stuff permanently (unless you can Wish them back in). This seems like bad news.
If you control both, you can stack them how you choose. You can take the unadvisable position above, or you can stack Portcullis first and then Worldgorger. Worldgorger removes all your permanents, including the Portcullis. This triggers Portcullis' second ability, returning to play all the creatures that were removed by it. If there are not still two creatures in play with the Portcullis' first ability resolves, nothing will happen. If there are still two creatures in play, it will remove the Dragon, triggering the Dragon's leaves-play ability. Everything you removed, including the Portcullis, will return to play, and the Dragon will be RFG. If other creatures come into play along with the Portcullis, it will trigger.
Q: The rules on sleeves in the comprehensive rules leave things to the discretion of the judge.
You are judging a Type 1 tournament and a player A arrives with his very expensive deck (lotus, moxen, etc) in hard plastic toploaders. After presenting his deck to his opponent player B in round 1, player B calls you over saying that he cannot shuffle the deck as he cannot shuffle toploaders. What would you do?
A: I wouldn't allow toploaders at all. First of all, the size isn't as regular as normal sleeves, leading to a potentially marked deck. More importantly, they're well larger than the cards, giving a player the opportunity to cheat by putting some cards on one side of the toploaders and some on the other.
Q: Could you please explain how to apply the layer model for the following two situations dealing with the ability of"Sorceress Queen" (or similar)?
Basic/General: There is a"*/*" creature (say,"number of mountains/number of forests in play" ="2/3") with two +1/+1 tokens, a"+1/-1" enchantment and"+0/+2" equipment on it. Now the Sorceress Queen's ability sets it to"0/2" -- is it really 0/2 by then?
Advanced: A morphed creature (i. e. 2/2) becomes affected by the Sorceress Queen's ability to set it to 0/2. After this resolves, the creature is turned face up and shows it is instead a 3/4 creature. Which is it -- 0/2 or 3/4?
A: It's generally a simple question of timestamps. Creatures with recalculated P/T (like Keldon Warlord) will calculate first (and then have the continuous effect of Sorceress Queen applied.
Base Power and Toughness is now only set by the printed values, copy effects or token-generating abilities. You start with base Power/Toughness, apply counters, then all other effects in timestamp order. Sorceress Queen and Humble will set the Power and Toughness to the given values in their place in the sequence, then later effects are evaluated.
1. It's 2/3 from its base ability, then 4/5 from the counters, 3/4 from the enchantment, then 3/6 from the equipment, and finally 0/2 from the Sorceress Queen, assuming the timestamps of the enchantment, equipment and Sorceress Queen are listed in order.
2. Same
Q: I have a couple of questions for you and I hope that they're not too 'n00bs'...
I have Akroma, Angel Of Wrath in play. My opponent play a Reiver Demon. Is Akroma immune to the demon ability ?
And...
I have Gratuitous Violence in play and I attack with a 5/5 trample creature. My opponent blocks with a 3/3. How much damage is dealt to my opponent ? 2, 4, 7 or 14 ?
A: N00b questions are allowed, so long as you've tried to first look them up in either our"Top Ten Questions" or the"Ask the Virtual Judge" database.
1. Reiver Demon's ability isn't targeted, so Akroma's Protection from Black won't save it.
2. Gratuitous Violence doubles the damage as it would be dealt, not at assignment. You still have to assign what would be lethal damage to the blocker before assigning damage to the player. Trample doesn't care what will happen to the damage later. You'd have to assign 3 to the creature and 2 to the player. When the damage resolves, the creature would take 6 and the player 4.
Q: With Confusion in the Ranks in play, if I play Viashino Sandstalker, I gain control of a target creature my opponent controls, and they get the Sandstalker. Does the Sandstalker come back to my hand at the end of my turn or my opponent's turn?
A: It triggers at end of turn, no matter who controls it. It goes back into its owner's hand.
Q: If I have Boomerang imprinted on Isochron Scepter, could I bounce Confusion in the Ranks in response to my opponent playing an artifact/creature/enchantment so that they can't take something of mine?
A. Yes, so long as you play it in response to them playing the spell, not in response to Confusion's comes-into-play triggered ability. Confusion in the Ranks must be in play when the creature comes into play in order for its ability to trigger.
Q: I have Eye Of Singularity already in play. What happens when my opponent sacrifices his Snake Basket and brings out a few green snake tokens. Since they all come into play at the same time, how would Eye Of Singularity affect them? Also, a friend of mine has a goblin deck where he pretty much sacrifices everything he brings out. Now, if he brings in 3 goblin tokens at the same time, would he be able to sac all three to do damage or does the Eye of Singularity wipe the other 2 out before he's able to sac them?
A: If a token-creating ability specifies a creature type, the token has the same name and creature type (rule 216.1). That means Snake Basket creates tokens with the name Cobra and the creature type Cobra. Eye of Singularly will trigger on all of them, each destroying the others. For example, if three come into play, the trigger from A will destroy B and C, B will destroy A and C, and C will destroy A and B.
Because Eye of Singularity's ability is triggered, it uses the stack. After the triggers go on the stack, your opponent can activate an ability that sacrifices the Goblins to something else; he'll be able to deal the damage.
Q: I have a 6/6 Broodstar in play while my opponent plays Riptide Mangler and use its ability to turn my Broodstar to 0/6 and making his Riptide Mangler a 6/3 until he uses its ability again on something else. My question is, is it true that because of the transfer my Broodstar will always have a power of 0/* and will never move and that the only variable is its toughness?
A: There's no transfer. Riptide Mangler doesn't *steal* the Broodstar's power, it just copies it.
