Ask the Judge, 07/16/2004
Rules Tip of the Day: An"enchant world" is a global enchantment. If two or more enchant worlds are in play, all except for the one that has been an enchant world for the shortest amount of time are put into their owners' graveyards. Enchant World cards appeared in Legends, Alliances, Homelands, Mirage, and Visions (and a few were reprinted in Chronicles).
Q: My opponent and I are both at 4 life. I have Platinum Angel in play. He plays Hurricane for 5. He says the game is a draw; I disagree. Who's right?
A: You're correct; you win the game. After Hurricane resolves, the game sees three State-Based Effects: Platinum Angel with lethal damage, and both of you with 0 or less life. You can't lose because the Platinum Angel is still in play at that time, but your opponent will lose the game at the same moment your Angel is put in the graveyard. Once Platinum Angel leaves play you would lose, but the game is already over by then.
Q: I have both Sunburst cards and Modular creatures in my graveyard when I play Roar of Reclamation. Do I get counters on both, only one, or neither?
A: Sunburst cards would come into play with 0 counters because they get counters based on the colors of mana used to play them. Since you didn't play them (you put them into play via an effect), they see 0 colors. Modular creatures are different because they have an ability that says they come into play with X counters regardless of how they get into play.
Q: With Mycosynth Lattice in play, does Mycosynth Golem give every spell I play Affinity?
A: No. Mycosynth Golem only applies to artifact spells (meaning while they're on the stack). Mycosynth Lattice doesn't turn things into artifacts until they're in play. They're colorless in other zones, but that doesn't mean they're artifacts.
Q: My opponent has Crawlspace and Maddening Imp in play. I have five untapped creatures in play. He uses Maddening Imp to make me attack with all my creatures. I want to attack with five creatures, but Crawlspace won't allow me to so I attack with two creatures. What happens?
A: You'll only be able to attack with two creatures, but you get to choose which two. The rest of them that were affected by Maddening Imp will be destroyed at EOT because they didn't attack. It doesn't matter that they weren't allowed to because of Crawlspace, it just matters that they were in play when Maddening Imp's ability resolved, and they didn't attack. Note that Maddening Imp's ability only applies to what was in play when the ability resolved. If, afterward, you played a creature and didn't attack with it, it wouldn't be destroyed.
Q: I have Darksteel Colossus and Triskelion in play, while my opponent has Darksteel Colossus of his own. If I attack and then deal four damage to his Colossus with Triskelion, will I be able to deal Trample damage to the opponent?
A: Yes, although there's really no such thing as Trample damage (it's just combat damage; it has no special attributes of its own). Trample only cares that you assign what would be lethal damage to the blocker; you can assign the rest to the defending player. Trample doesn't care that later the damage would be prevented (like via Protection) or won't actually be lethal (in the case of Indestructible). If his Colossus already has four damage on it, you can assign seven to it and the other four to the defending player.
Q: I have Troll Ascetic in play and my opponent targets it with Terror. What is the DCI policy in such situations? Should my opponent leave the mana tapped and put Terror in the graveyard or must he retarget the Terror?
A: He returns the Terror to his hand and untaps the mana. An illegal announcement will never lead to the spell going to the graveyard or forcing him to retarget to something legal. You back up and start over. It doesn't matter if he tapped mana and then announced Terror or announced and then tapped. Even if he taps mana first, he's made an illegal payment for something he couldn't announce, so undoes every payment (and anything that may have triggered off that payment). Note that this wouldn't be the case if he intentionally floated a larger amount of mana and only used some of it to pay for the Terror. In that case, he'd put the Terror back in his hand and still have all that mana floating. He'd get a penalty for Procedural Error-Major. As always, if you're in this situation, call a Judge.
Q: If I imprint Time Spiral onto my Panoptic Mirror, can I continuously use the Spiral's effect since it says it must be removed from the game?
A: Obviously, you're playing in an unsanctioned event, but yes, you can continuously use it. There's obviously no physical card to remove, but the rest of the spell resolving isn't contingent on that removal happening.
Q: How does Crucible of Worlds interact with Burgeoning?
A: Not at all, really, assuming you're talking about controlling both of them. The land cards are in your graveyard, not your hand; Crucible of Worlds only gives you the ability to play them as if they were in your hand. When your opponent plays a land, you can only put one from your hand into play. If your opponent has Crucible and you have Burgeoning, his playing a land via the Crucible will trigger Burgeoning because he's actually playing a land, so the trigger condition is met.
Q: When Unstable Mutation gives a creature -1/-1 counters, do the counters go away when the enchantment does?
A: No, because the ability doesn't say that it does. The counters go on the creature (not the enchantment) and stay there even if the enchantment leaves play.
Q: I'm confused by the interaction of Last Word and Shunt. I understand that I can Shunt the Last Word to the Shunt (the old Misdirection trick) but when Shunt leaves the stack and is put into the graveyard, the game would see that the Last Word is targeting an illegal taget, and would be countered by the game rules. However, this contradicts the rule of thumb that"don't" effects always rule over the"do" effects. Help me!
A: It doesn't contradict anything because Last Word specifically says that it can't be countered by spells or abilities (just like Urza's Rage). It can still be countered by game rules.
