Looked dead, didn't I? But I wasn't. But it wasn't from lack of trying, I can tell you that. Actually, Bill's last bullet put me in a coma - A coma I was to lie in for four years. When I woke up, I went on what the movie advertisements refer to as a"roaring rampage of revenge." I roared. And I rampaged. And I got bloody satisfaction. I've killed a hell of a lot of people to get to this point... And now this is Ask Ken. I'm your host, Ken Krouner. There is a big change to Ask Ken coming soon, but for now curl up with this question.

Today's question comes to us from Iain Blank. Iain writes:

Hey I'm new to MTGO and I started drafting MD5 and, I am not the greatest and was wondering how to put your articles to work (what should I pick in a pack?) or how should I focus? on how to build my and deck and what my deck base is (how am I going to win).

Well Iain, this is not an easy question. My space is short so I will answer is as succinctly as possible. I am going to give you some general guidelines for draft, since MD5 won't be around too much longer.

Step one is to establish which cards are good and which ware bad. This should come from a combination of theory, practice, and advice. Generally the most important cards are good creatures and creature removal.

Once you feel you have a handle on which cards are good, you want to make sure you stick to two colors. Two is the consensus number to give you good mana and a wide enough variety of spells.

Now to draft a powerful deck, you want to avoid drafting the same colors that the people sitting next to you are drafting. This means that unless your first pick is insanely powerful, the cards being passed to you in the first pack should primarily determine your colors your draft. The person on your right will be passing you packs for two-thirds of the draft. Just figure out what colors he will be passing your throughout the draft.

When you finish drafting your deck you will normally want to run 16-18 land, 14-17 creatures, and the rest spells. Try to have a good balance of two-, three-, and four-mana casting cost creatures.

This is a basic outline and should help you get started.

The source on the basics even if he can't apply them himself,
KK

Get ready for a change kiddies, I think you'll like it. G'night everybody!
