Ask the Judge, 09/15/2004
Rules Tip of the Day: In a tournament you always have the option of appealing a ruling given by a judge to the head judge. Just make sure that you allow the floor judge the chance to give a complete ruling.
Q: I have Endless Whispers and Isamaru, Hound of Konda in play. If I play another Isamaru they both go to the graveyard, and at the end of turn, my opponent gets them in play, and they instantly go away again, right? What if I play another Isamaru after they are both in my graveyard? Do they all die at the end of turn?
A: Yes, if two Legends go to the graveyard due to the new (and in my opinion improved) Legends rule, then both will return to play at the end of the current turn under an opponent's control due to Endless Whispers. These two Legends will return one at a time, each when the appropriate Endless Whispers triggered ability resolves. After both abilities have resolved and returned the two Legends both will go to the graveyard again, which will trigger Endless Whispers again.
If another Legend of the same name enters play in-between when they went to the graveyard and before they return, then it too will go to the graveyard when the first one returns to play. The second one will then return to play, but when it will be the only Legend with that name in play so it will stay in play.
Q: I have Asmira Holy Avenger and Tombstone Stairwell in play. Whose graveyard do the Tombstone tokens go into at the end of the turn when they are destroyed? Mine, since it was my Tombstone Stairwell that triggered the creation of the token(s)? Or my opponent's, since she is the one putting the token(s) into play? Obviously, the answer to this greatly affects the number of +1/+1 counters Asmira gets at the end of the turn.
A: They will go to your graveyard, as you are the owner of these tokens. You may not control them, but your Tombstone Stairwell created them so you own them and they go to your graveyard when they are destroyed. Because of this, when Asmira's ability resolves it will count all of the tokens created by the Stairwell that went to the graveyard that turn (Just make sure that at the end of the turn that you put Asmira's ability on the stack first followed by the end of turn trigger of the Tombstone Stairwell, so these token creatures have gone to the graveyard when Asmira's triggered ability resolves).
Q: Bringer of the Red Dawn can only target creatures that are tapped with its ability? Correct?
A: No. The Red Bringer's ability can target any creature. There is an instruction to untap the targeted creature when the ability resolves, but that is not a targeting condition.
Q: Does Nether Void counter the copied spell from an Isochron Scepter like it would any other spell?
A: Yes. Nether Void will trigger whenever a spell is played and counter that spell unless its controller pays 3 mana. Isochron Scepter makes a copy of a card, and you still play this copy as a spell so Nether Void will trigger.
Q: I'm playing my Lifeline deck, and my friends are using Zombie, Goblin, and Sliver tribal decks. Each of us has creatures with abilities that trigger when they come into play. If someone plays Wrath of God, how do we determine the order in which their abilities go on the stack after Lifeline restores them?
A: As the controller of the Lifeline you will determine this order. Lifeline's ability will return the creatures destroyed by the Wrath of God one at a time. When the Wrath of God resolves, the Lifeline will trigger once for each creature in play; when these triggered abilities resolve delayed triggered abilities will be created. As the controller of these delayed triggered abilities you determine the order that they go on the stack at the end of the current turn. After each individual Lifeline trigger resolves, the creature associated with that trigger will come into play. If this triggers a coming into play ability, then it will trigger and go on the stack on top of the remaining Lifeline triggers. This coming into play ability will then resolve before any other Lifeline triggered abilities resolve.
Q: If my Darksteel Colossus were Memory Lapsed, where would it go? Don't I choose between the two replacement effects?
A: It will go to the top of your library. Memory Lapse's effect is applied before the replacement effect of the Colossus. Because the Colossus' destination isn't the graveyard, its ability will not be applied.
Q: I have been using a combo for the last couple of months, and the other day there was some controversy over the combo. This is the combo: Grotesque Hybrid equipped with Surestike Trident and Nemesis Mask. My theory is that every untapped creature that the defending opponent controls gets destroyed. However, one of my opponents stated that the instant death effect of my hybrid wouldn't take effect until the end of combat.
A: Grotesque Hybrid's ability triggers when it deals combat damage to a creature, this ability will go on the stack right away and resolve before the normal combat damage step (because the Hybrid is given First Strike by the Trident). Keep in mind that unless you 'pump' it up. You will only be able to use this combination to destroy 3 of the blocking creatures because the Hybrid only has a power of 3.
Q: I have a question about the Earthcraft / Squirrel Nest combo. How would the situation be handled when both players have the combo out? I can't figure it out. Would it be a draw?
A: Each turn or each player would be allowed to choose a number of times to repeat the process with the non-active player choosing second. Because the non-active player chooses he would be able to choose to repeat the process more often than the active player. While this situation would very likely create a stalemate, by only allowing each player to repeat the process once you do not have an automatic draw.
Here is the relevant rule:
421.5. If the loop contains at least one optional action controlled by each player and these actions don't depend on one another, the active player chooses a number. The nonactive player can either agree to that number or choose a higher number. Note that this rule applies even if the actions could exist in separate loops rather than in a single loop.
Q: If I play Animate Dead and use it to grab Konda, Lord of Eiganjo (Or anything indestructible) and my opponent Naturalizes Animate Dead, would Konda actually stay in play?
A: Yes that works. The Indestructibility of the enchanted creature will prevent it from being destroyed by the Animate Dead leaves play trigger.
