Rules Tip of the Day: The controller of a leaves-play triggered ability is the person who controlled the source of the ability when the permanent left play.
Q: I had Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Ember-fist Zubera and Teller of Tales. During my turn I tapped Kiki-Jiki and made a token of Teller of Tales. I then played a Spirit spell and untapped Kiki-Jiki, made another copy Teller, and untapped Kiki again to make yet another token Teller. Finally I played another Spirit spell and using the trick above made 4 token copies of the Ember-Fist Zubera.
How Zuberas will die out at end of my turn? Is there delayed triggered ability that will kill them one by one or they will go to graveyard simultaneously?
A: At the beginning of the end of turn step delayed triggered abilities for each of the token copies made by Kiki-Jiki will go on the stack. Each of these abilities will resolve individually, not all at once. When the first token Zubera is sacrificed, the Zubera ability will trigger and go on top of the stack; you need to choose a target for this ability. This Zubera triggered ability will resolve before the other Zuberas are sacrificed and only one point of damage will be dealt. Eventually, a second Zubera will be sacrificed, and the triggered ability from this Zubera will deal 2 points of damage. Then the triggered ability from the third Zubera will deal 3 points and so on. While you will be able to choose different targets for each Zubera ability, if you target the same creature or player with all of the Zubera triggered abilities you will only be able to deal a total of 10 damage.
Q: I have Spawning Pit in play and the person I am playing has Oath of Druids. He uses Forbidden Orchard during his upkeep giving me a spirit token. Can I sacrifice the token to the Spawning Pit before he has the opportunity to activate Oath.
A: Oath of Druids does not have an activated ability, it has a triggered ability. If at the beginning of your opponent's upkeep he does not control fewer creatures than you the Oath will not trigger at all. In order for the Oath to trigger he would have to use the Orchard's ability at the end of your turn. Even if he did do this you could sacrifice this spirit to put a counter on the Pit before his upkeep begins. When Oath's triggered ability goes to resolve, it will see that the trigger condition isn't still true, and nothing will happen.
Q: Is Sigil of the New Dawn a replacement effect? If I have Soulcatchers' Aerie in play will, it trigger if a Bird goes to the graveyard and I choose to return it to my hand?
A: No. Sigil of the New Dawn has a triggered ability, not a replacement effect. You can tell it is a triggered ability because it uses the word 'whenever.' The ability of Soulcatcher's Aerie will trigger whenever a Bird goes to your graveyard if you control. It doesn't matter it the card is returned to your hand by the Sigil.
Q: With the new Legendary rule, if one Yosei, the Morning Star is already in play and another comes into play, they both go to the graveyard. Here is the scenario I faced. I played Bribery taking control of my opponent's Yosei, the Morning Star. He then played Ivory Mask. On his next turn next turn he played another Yosei, the Morning Star. I can't target him. With his that died, he also targeted me. Do I skip my next 2 untap phases?
A: Yes, because your opponent can not be targeted, you will have to be targeted by both of these triggered abilities. You will skip your next two untap steps. When you put the triggered ability on the tack that you control you can choose to not target any permanents you control, but your opponent will most likely not be as nice.
Q: If I do have to skip two separate untap steps, how does this differ from multiple activations of Mindslaver being redundant?
A: This is different from Mindslaver because of the differences between these specific rules:
419.6e Skipping an action, step, phase, or turn is a replacement effect. "Skip [something]" is the same as "Instead of doing [something], do nothing." Once a step, phase, or turn has started, it can no longer be skipped-any skip effects will wait until the next occurrence.
507.1a Multiple turn-controlling effects that affect the same player overwrite each other. The last one to be created is the one that works.
Yosei's ability causes you to skip a step, and therefore any other skip effects will wait around for the next step to occur. Rule 507.1a covers Mindslaver and how only the most recent effect is applied.
Q: Sword of Light and Shadow gives a creature protection from white. After he declares his attack with a creature equipped with the Sword, I turn his Sword of Light and Shadow white using Eight-and-a-Half tails ability. Question is what would happen? Would the sword fall off, or would it stay on?
A: The Sword will fall off. It doesn't matter that the equipment is what is giving this creature protection from white. After the Eight-and-a-Half Tails' ability resolves, state based effects are checked. At this point the equipped creature has protection from white, but it is equipped with a piece of white equipment. The equipment will fall off. This is different from similar local enchantments that can give a creature from a source like White Ward or Tattoo Ward, because the effects given by those enchantments specifically state that they do not remove themselves.
Q: Can the ability of Mesmeric Orb be Stifled? I thought no player can play spells during the untap step.
A: Yes, it can be Stifled. While you are correct no player gets priority in the untap step, the triggered ability from the Mesmeric Orb does not go on the stack until the upkeep step. This is because triggered abilities wait around to go on the stack until someone does receive priority. Keep in mind that Mesmeric Orb's ability triggers once for each permanent that is untapped. If your opponent does stifle an ability, it will only prevent a single card from being 'milled.'
Q: I have Repercussion and Furnace of Rath in play and my opponent has ten creatures. I play Inferno, dealing six damage to all creatures and players. I take twelve (6x2), assuming I have no creatures. Does my opponent take 132 ((6 x 2) x 10 + 12) or 252 (((6 x 2) x 10) x 2 + 12)? Basically, the question is: Does the Furnace of Rath double the damage to the player after it's already been doubled for the creatures?
A: Yes. Repercussion has a triggered ability that triggers when a creature is dealt damage. This damage is not the same damage that is dealt when the Inferno resolves. So the Furnace of Rath will double the damage from the Inferno and then double that number again when Repercussion triggered abilities resolve. So in the end your opponent will receive 12 points of damage form the Inferno and 24 points of damage for each creature he controls. In this situation this would be 252 points of damage, but it's highly likely he'd lose the game before all this damage is actually dealt.
Q: If I had two Elvish Pipers in play, could I play B.F.M. (Big Furry Monster) left and right cards for GG?
A: No. When an individual Elvish Piper ability resolves you can only put a single card into play. In order for B.F.M. to enter play both sides must enter play at the same time.
Q: What responsibility do I have as a player to declare effects like Kami of the Hunt's +1/+1 trigger? For example: My opponent has a 2/2 creature with no special abilities. I have a Kami of the Hunt. I play a Cruel Deceiver and attack with the Kami, my opponent blocks, forgetting the triggered ability.
What responsibility do I have to inform my opponent of such triggers? Is my opponent responsible for monitoring the game state of such effects, or am I responsible for telling him? If so, what penalties might be enacted when I call the judge at a PTQ because my opponent does NOT declare the abilities?
A: Both players have a responsibility to keep track of and know the game state. Kami of the Hunt's ability does not target, does require any choices to be made, it is not optional and it doesn't require either player to make any actions like changing a life total or adding a counter; because of this I have no problem with a player not announcing that Kami ability.
