Rules Tip of the Day: While many cards have effects that raise or lower the amount of mana you must pay when playing a spell, like the Talismans from Tempest, the Familiars from Planeshift or Chill and Sphere of Resistance, nothing affects the converted mana cost of a card.
Q: I have a question regarding Akki Coalflinger. I recently heard that if you control Akki Coalflinger and your opponent attacks, you can block with the Coalflinger, put First Strike damage on the stack, and then activate Akki Coalflinger to give all your opponent's attacking creatures First Strike. Then you proceed to normal damage, and your opponents creatures cant deal normal damage because they now have First Strike and First Strike damage has already been done. Is this true?
A: No. Giving a creature first strike after first strike combat damage has already gone on the stack will not prevent that creature from dealing combat damage. This is specifically covered in rule 502.2c to prevent such abuse. The first strike ability is not meant to be manipulated as a trick to prevent a creature from dealing any combat damage.
Q: I have Kiki-Jiki in play. I cast Siege-Gang Commander. I then tap Kiki-Jiki using his ability to copy the Commander. When the copy comes into play, I also get three 1/1 Goblins. What happens at end of turn? Do the tokens of the copied Commander stay in play like the other tokens of the original Commander?
A: The token creature made by the coming into play triggered ability of the copy Siege-Gang Commander will remain in play. Once these token creatures are created they have no further connection to this copy of Siege-Gang Commander and will remain in play even if it leaves.
Q: If my opponent has Night of Souls' Reach in play and I play Arcbound Ravager, does it instantly die, or do I have time to sacrifice an artifact to it so it'll live?
A: The Ravager will enter play as a 0/0 and go to the graveyard before anyone has priority to play anything, so you can't sacrifice it or sacrifice another artifact to give it an additional counter. The Ravager will enter play with a +1/+1 counter on it and its Modular ability will trigger. So you will be able to out a +1/+1 counter on an artifact creature in play.
Q: What happens if I have Blood Moon in play and I play Price of Progress? Does Price of Progress still do damage to my opponent because Blood Moon doesn't change the land type, it is just making it into a Mountain?
A: Blood Moon does not change the supertype of the non-basic lands that it changes. The lands it affects will still be non-basic lands; they will just have the subtype of mountain. In other words, Blood Moon does not affect the amount of damage that a Price of Progress deals.
Q: I have Celestial Convergence in play and my opponent plays Platinum Angel. Then when my counters run out on Celestial Convergence (with me having highest life total), then will my opponent still loose game?
A: No, he will not lose the game because of the Platinum Angel. The Celestial Convergence will then stay in play and do nothing further. If the life totals of both players were the same, then the game would have been a draw, as Platinum Angel's ability does not prevent that from happening.
Q: If someone plays Duress and targets you, do you have to reveal your hand to all players or just them?
A: You must show your hand to all players. To reveal a card in a hidden zone is to show it to all players in the game, not just the controller of the reveal effect.
Q: If my opponent casts Browbeat, is there a way for me to Misdirect it so I get to draw 3 cards?
A: While you can Misdirect it so that Browbeat now targets you, when Browbeat resolves your opponent, or any other player in the game, can choose to have Browbeat deal 5 damage to him so you don't draw the cards.
Q: What happens when I have Cowardice and Kamahl, Fist of Krosa in play and I use Kamahl's ability to turn my opponents land into a creature? Does this force him or her to return that land to his/her hand or not?
A: No. Cowardice only triggers when a creature is targeted. Kamahl, Fist of Krosa's ability may turn the targeted land into a creature but when it is targeted it just a land. However, it is possible to cause Cowardice to trigger if you target a land that is already also a creature.
Q: If I play Celestial Dawn and Blanket of the Night, would that make my lands Plains or Plains AND Swamps? Does the order in which they are played matter?
A: It depends on the order that these two permanents enter play. If Celestial Dawn came into play second then your lands will be just plains. If Blanket of Night came into play second then they will be both swamps and plains.
Q: I have a question based on Time Stop and this rule concerning ending the turn:
509.1a Remove every object on the stack from the game. Remove all attacking and blocking creatures, if any, from combat. All objects not in play or on the stack that aren't represented by cards will cease to exist the next time state-based effects are checked (see rule 420, "State-Based Effects").
It seems that Time Stop eliminates mana burn. So if I were to have played 3 Dark Rituals (having 9 black in pool) and go to play Sarcomancy to which my opponent plays Time Stop, would I take 8 mana burn or would that mana cease to exist?
A: Mana is not an object. Objects in Magic are those that exist in one of the zones; in play, the stack, library, graveyard and removed from the game. Time Stop does not affect mana left in someone's pool, so a player will take mana burn for any mana left in his or her pool when Time Stop resolves.
