Rules Tip of the Day: Combat damage is the damage dealt by attacking and blocking creatures in the combat damage step that is equal to their power. Other spells and abilities may deal damage in the combat phase, or combat damage step, but that does not make it combat damage.
Q: With regards to Moonring Mirror, does the card's effect happen "in addition to" drawing a card? Or "Instead of" drawing a card? That is to say, during my draw step, do if I have Moonring Mirror in play, during my draw step, do I set that card aside? Or do I remove the top card, and then draw a card?
A: Moonring Mirror has a triggered ability that triggers when you do draw a card, so it will happen in addition to drawing a card that turn. Any time you would draw a card you first draw and then when Moonring Mirror's ability resolves you remove the top card from your library and remove it from the game.
Q: If my opponent counters my Mana Seism, do I lose my sacrificed lands or does the sacrificing actually never occur because the spell was countered?
A: You do not sacrifice lands to get additional mana until Mana Seism resolves. If Mana Seism is countered then you are not given the chance to sacrifice any lands.
Q: If Godo, Bandit Warlord attacks but dies in combat (and he is, thus, out of play), do I get a second attack step?
A: When Godo attacks the first time in a turn its ability triggers. You will get a second combat phase as long as this ability resolves. It does not matter if Godo is destroyed in this first combat phase, its ability will still have created a second combat phase.
Q: I have two Greater Harvester in play and no other permanents. At the beginning of my upkeep do I have to sacrifice both Harvesters or just one?
A: You will have to sacrifice both Harvesters. This is because both are in play at the beginning of your upkeep and the abilities of each will trigger. When each ability resolves you will have to sacrifice a permanent, you can't somehow sacrifice the same permanent twice.
Q: If I use Gauntlets of Chaos, can I exchange the token created by my Hornet Cannon with my opponent's Serra Angel?
A: Yes, both the token creature and the Serra Angel have the permanent type "creature," so you can exchange them when Gauntlets of Chaos' ability resolves.
Q: When lands are destroyed and returned to play by Sacred Ground do they return untapped?
A: Mostly yes. They return to play as they normally come into play. A land like Boseiju, Who Shelters All will come into play tapped even when returned to play by Sacred Ground.
Q: Player A is playing a blue/green deck, with a few blue creatures in play. He plays Bribery, and fetches Doomsday Specter from Player B's deck. Player B is holding Crystal Spray. Can he respond to the Doomsday's gating trigger by playing it and changing "bounce blue or black creature" to, say, "bounce red or black creature" so A can't pick up one of his blue guys, and thus is forced to return the Specter to player B's hand?
A: No, that does not work. Once activated or triggered. an ability is independent of its source. You may have changed the text of the ability on the Doomsday Specter in play, but the ability on the stack will still read 'blue or black creature.'
Q: Can I play S.N.O.T. and combine it with my opponent's S.N.O.T.? If so, who controls the combined S.N.O.T.?
A: Yes, you can play S.N.O.T and stick it to a S.N.O.T controlled by your opponent. However, this combined creature will be controlled by whoever controlled the original. In other words, your opponent will control it.
Q: I have a rules question about Look at me I'm R&D. If I play the card and choose 1/2 as the first number and 1 1/2 as the second number what happens to cards like Supersize (+3 1/2, +3 1/2)? If I read the card correctly you replace all instances of the first number with the second so it would be +31 1/2, +31 1/2. Is this correct?
A: Technically speaking in a 'real' game of Magic when an effect has you choose a number you can only choose a positive whole number. Unhinged is a little different and the Unhinged FAQ (or FAQTIWDAWCC) has stated that you can choose fractional numbers (or at least those with a denominator of 2) when dealing with this card. However, in order to replace the number on Supersize me you have to choose the entire number of 3 1/2. You cannot just replace the 1/2 portion of that number.
Q: I was wondering in a sanctioned tournament if your opponent asks you to remove the sleeves of your deck do you have to? Someone told me this and I did not believe it. If someone told me to take the sleeves off my extended deck I would say no, not because I am cheating, but because I have 42 rares main deck. Please tell me that this rule is not true?
A: It used to be that a player could request that his opponent de-sleeve his deck, but that is not true anymore (and hasn't been for many years--Sheldon). However, a player can ask a judge to evaluate a deck and see if the sleeves are marked. Depending on the situation the judge can give a penalty, have you de-sleeve, get new sleeves, or do nothing.
