Rules Tip of the Day: When multiple abilities trigger at the same time all of these abilities will go on the stack the next time a player receives priority.
Q: Can I Splice any effect on a spell while Rule of Law is in play?
A: Yes, when you play an arcane spell with text spliced onto it you are still only playing one spell. Rule of Law will not prevent any player from splicing text.
Q: I have Vedalken Orrery and a Rule of Law, my question is with both in play, can I play more than one spell during my opponent's turn or am I limited to one spell too?
A: Vedalken Orrery's effect does not override the effect of Rule of Law. You may be able to play virtually anything when you could play an instant, but that does not mean that with Rule of Law in play you will be able to play more than one spell per turn.
Q: I play Living Terrain on my Blinkmoth Nexus. Do I get a 5/6 flyer if I activate the Nexus or a 6/7 flyer cause the Nexus is a 1/1when activated?
A: Neither. If the Nexus is unanimated by it's own ability when the Living Terrain resolves then the Nexus will become a 5/6 creature without flying. If you then use the Nexus's ability it will become a 1/1 creature with flying. If the Nexus is animated by it's own ability when the Living Terrain resolves, then it will become a 5/6 creature with flying, but it will only have flying until the end off the current turn. At the end of the current turn when the Neuxs' animation ability wears off it will revert to a 5/6 land creature without flying. If in later turns you animate it again, it will become a 1/1 creature with flying. Using an additional animation effect on the Blinkmoth Nexus after it has animated using its own ability is not cumulative, the Nexus will have the power and toughness of whatever effect animated it last.
Q: If I use Leonin Sun Standard's ability once, and then play more creatures or use something like Rude Awakening, do the new creatures/lands get the bonus attack?
A: No. The effect from Leonine Sun Standard's ability is only applied to those creatures that you control when the Sun Standard ability resolves.
Q: I want to be fully clear on Serum Powder's second ability. If you draw it in your opening hand, what occurs? Do you have to choose either remove the 7 cards from the game and draw 7 new ones (and if you do, do you shuffle you deck first then draw 7?), take the mulligan, shuffle your deck and draw 6 cards, or can you use the serum powders ability drawing 7 plus the mulligan draw 6 for a total of 13 cards?
A: When you draw a Serum Powder in your opening hand you have three options, you can either a) keep that hand, b) take a normal mulligan where you shuffle this hand in to your library and draw a new hand with one less card or c) reveal your hand and show the Serum Powder, remove that hand from the game and draw card equal to the number of cards that were in that hand. You cannot simultaneously take a normal and a Serum Powder mulligan to draw a 13 card starting hand.
Q: If Tsabo's Web is in play, will it prevent Treetop Village from untapping? Or does the player have to use the activated ability that does not produce mana for the Tsabo's Web effect to work on it?
A: The Village will not untap. It does not matter why this land with a non-mana activated ability is tapped or if the activated ability is used, Tsabo's Web will prevent it from untapping in it's controllers untap step.
Q: If I have a Rhystic Study in play, and my opponent tries to play a spell, does he have to pay the extra one mana at the time he taps it to play his spell to keep me from drawing a card?
A: When your opponent plays a spell Rhystic Study's ability will trigger. This triggered ability will go on the stack on top of the spell that triggered the Study. Your opponent is given the option of paying 1 mana when this triggered ability resolves, not when he played the spell. If he does not then you draw a card at that time.
Q: If I have a Tahngarth, Talruum Hero and Mephidross Vampire in play, and activate Tahngarth targeting my opponent's 4/4 creature, will Tahngarth die? Does his ability allow the counters to be applied before the target 4/4 returns it's damage?
A: The ability granted by Mephidross Vampier is a triggered ability that will use the stack and it won't go on the stack until Tahngarth's ability has resolved completely and state-based effects are checked. When Tahngarth's ability resolves Tahngarth will deal 4 damage to the targeted creature, this will trigger the Mephidross Vampire ability. However before this ability can go on he stack the targeted creature will deal 4 points of damage to Tahngarth. Then once this ability has completely resolved state-based effects are checked and both of these creatures will go to the graveyard. Finally the Mephidross Vampire ability will go on the stack, however when it resolves the Tahngarth is not in play so it will be unable to get a counter.
Q: If I have Parallel Thoughts in play and I cast Brainstorm, can I draw three of the cards removed from game pile by Parallel Thoughts' ability and then put two of them back on top of my library? I assumed I could but was unsure of how that worked since I was drawing three cards rather then one.
A: Yes, that does work. Anytime you draw multiple cards you are actually drawing one card multiple times. An effect that replaces individual draws can replace each one of these actions. You may replace the draws created by Brainstorm, but that does not change the rest of the effect when you choose two cards in your hand to put on top of your library.
Q: I have a question about the antiquities artifact, Candelabra of Tawnos. Since Mono Artifact is no longer a type, and has been replaced by Artifact according to the rules, I'm assuming that this doesn't count as errata. If R&D's Secret Lab is in play, would I be able to tap a land like City of Traitors an unlimited number of times creating whatever number of mana I desire?
A: Technically speaking, any changes to a cards text or differences between a cards text and the official Oracle text is errata, so I think R&D's Secret Lab will make your Candelabra a mono-artifact. However I would argue that the rules that used to govern mono-artifacts would still apply. Mono-artifacts became tapped when their abilities were used, so you won't be able to abuse this combination.
