Ask the Judge, 01/14/2005
Rules Tip of the Day: Even with the recent slight change to the targeting rules, a spell is only countered on resolution if ALL of it's targets are not legal when it resolves.
Q: I have a few Samurai in play and I declare the Beginning of Attack phase. My opponent plays Psychic Puppetry to tap one of my Samurai. I would like to play Call to Glory to untap him and make him available to attack again, but I'm not sure that I get the opportunity to play instants and abilities after the Puppetry resolves. Can I do this before declaring attackers?
A: Yes, you can. You do not advance to the next step or phase until both players pass priority in succession without doing anything. In this example you can play Call to Glory before you go on to the Declaration Attackers step. If you do, then the Samurai tapped by the Puppetry will be untapped and able to attack.
Q: Does Tatsumasa, the Dragon's Fang have to be attached to a creature in order to pay 6 and remove it from the game, to bring in the token? Or can it be done at any time as an instant?
A: No, Tatsumasa does not need to be attached to a creature in order to remove it from the game and put a Dragon token into play. You can play that ability anytime you have priority.
Q: If I have both Shaman en-Kor and Lashknife Barrier in play and I activate Shaman's 1W ability then redistribute damage one point at a time using its other ability. Will Lashknife barrier reduce each of these one points to zero, effectively making all of my creatures unkillable?
A: Not quite. Lashknife Barrier reduces each source of damage by one. If you redirect all of the damage from a one source to a single creature, then Lashknife Barrier's effect will only reduce this total amount by one. However, if you redirect just one point of damage to each creature you control, then yes, this damage till be prevented.
Q: I have two Parallel Thoughts in play each with a pile of cards removed from the game. When I draw a card can I take a card from each of these piles and put it into my hand?
A: If you have two Parallel Thoughts in play that have each removed a pile of cards, when you would normally draw a card you can choose to draw from one pile of cards or the other, but not both. An event can only be replaced by one replacement effect.
Q: When Body Snatcher's goes-to-the-graveyard ability triggers, does it have to be there when it resolves? Can I activate Haunted Crossroads (already having declared Random J Fatty to be returned) and prevent the Body Snatcher from being removed? And still return Random J Fatty to play?
A: Returning the targeted creature card in your graveyard to play is not contingent on removing the Body Snatcher from the game. So yes, you can put the Snatcher on top of your library with Haunted Crossroads before the Snatcher's ability resolves and still put Random J Fatty into play.
Q: I have Rhystic Study and my opponent is trying to play Prodigal Sorcerer. If I Counterspell the sorcerer, do I still get to draw the card if he does not pay the Study Cost?
A: If you counter his spell before the triggered ability resolves, that does not affect the triggered ability; it will still resolve and if he does not pay one mana you will draw a card. In fact, you can wait until after the Rhystic Study ability resolves to counter his spell. This means that if he does not pay the one mana, you can counter his spell with a counterspell that you just drew.
Q: I have searched the DCI floor rules and the Universal Tournament rules and found nothing on the subject, so here goes. I've heard that it is against the floor rules to redraw pairings after a match has begun. Is this true? Two examples: once I played in an Extended PTQ and was paired against Fish, which was a great matchup for me. Before the round started they redrew pairings and I got High Tide and lost. This seems fine despite getting screwed. But the other example would be at a Team Sealed PTQ where we were six or seven minutes into the round and games had already been won and lost, and they repaired us. This would seem to be contrary to the rules. What is the official policy?
A: The only official policy is that that head judge can do almost anything to preserve the integrity of the event. You didn't really include the details as to why you were repaired so I can't comment on that. But if the head judge felt the need to repair for some reason, he can do that. It is unfortunate that it did not happen until several minutes into the round, but it is better to spend the time to get things right than to just let a problem continue.
