Rules Tip of the Day: Giving a creature First Strike after its First Strike damage has already gone on the stack will not prevent it from dealing combat damage.
Q: My opponent attacks me with Nagao, Bound by Honor. Can I destroy it with Terashi's Grasp before it gets the +1/+1 bonus for being an attacking Samurai?
A: Yes. That ability is a triggered ability which uses the stack. You can respond to the triggered ability by playing Terashi's Grasp in order to destroy Nagao before it becomes a 4/4 creature.
Q: Can I use Minamo's Meddling to counter a spell that does not have anything spliced onto it? How about a non-Arcane spell? If I can, do I still get to look at that player's hand?
A: Yes. Minamo's Meddling can target any spell, not just Arcane spells or spells that have had text spliced onto them. When this spell is countered that controller of that spell will reveal his hand, it does not matter it nothing was spliced.
Q: If I choose to Splice Consuming Vortex into Waking Nightmare, can I first send a creature into the player's hand, and then make him discard two cards?
A: No. The Spliced-on text always comes after the 'base' text, so the targeted player will discard two card first and then return the targeted creature to his / her hand.
Q: If a play Blood Oath, declaring the target as I play the spell, must I also declare the type of card when I play it, so my opponent decides if he wants to counter it, or can I wait until the spell resolves?
A: You do not choose a card type until Blood Oath resolves.
Q: An en-Kor creature cannot target itself, correct? There are some situations where it would be beneficial to me to have Daru Spiritualist in play as opposed to a Nomads or Shaman (post life gain); but thats not possible as the end of the current errata states "...is dealt to target creature you control instead." The "instead" is what makes the targetting of itself impossible, correct? My friend seems to think otherwise - he claims that since the legal target is any creature you control; the en-Kor qualifies.
A: There is nothing to prevent an en-Kor creature from targeting itself. The word 'instead' indicates that a replacement effect is created when this ability resolves and that this effect that will redirect the next point of damage, but that does not mean that it is a targeting restriction. If this en-Kor creature is later dealt damage, then the replacement effect won't really do anything.
Q: I play my Mox Pearl, and my opponent plays Envelop. He claims that envelop works because Sorceries and Artifacts are the same speed. Is he right?
A: Your opponent is incorrect (because there are no speeds in Magic--Sheldon). While both Sorceries and Artifacts can only be played during one of the main phases of your turn when the stack is empty, that does not mean that they are both Sorceries. Envelop can only counter actual sorceries, not other spells that are played like sorceries.
Q: In a multiplayer game, can I attack multiple players at once during my attack phase?
A: As of right now there are no official multi-player rules, so its pretty much up to your playgroup on how to handle this now. That may change in the near future, as the rules folks are working on incorporating multiplayer rules and/or guideline into the official rules. According to these proposed rules you can only attack one opponent at a time.
Q: I'm playing a DCI Sanctioned event, and I reach the time limit. According to the rules when the time limit is reached each of the players have 5 remaining turns to finish the game. If I am playing Shahrazad and I am in, lets say, the 3rd sub game (and yes it has happened several times) How do the turns work? Do we go back to the main game and play 5 turns there? Just play 5 turns in the sub game? Or play 5 turns in each sub game?
A: First, each player doesn't get five turns; the five turns is an absolute, regardless of who takes them. You will play five turns in whatever game or sub-game you are in, then the entire main game will end.
