Rules Tip of the Day: The color(s) of a card are determined by the colored mana in the mana cost in the upper right hand of a card. It does not matter if this card has other colored costs associated with it, like Kicker, or a multi colored alternate play cost, like the Bringers from Fifth Dawn.
Q: I have Shimmering Glasskite and Kami of the Waning Moon in play. I target the Glasskite with Horobi's Whisper, and also with the Kami's ability. Which gets countered?
A: Horobi's Whisper will be countered as it is the first spell or ability to target the Glasskite. It does not matter that the Kami's ability triggers when the Whisper is played and that it resolves first, the Whisper was the first thing to target the Glasskite.
Q: What happens when one of your creatures is targeted by a spell when both Kira, Great Glass-Spinner and Horobi, Death's Wail are in play?
A: The targeted creature is still destroyed. When this targeted spell or ability is played both Kira's and Horobi's abilities will trigger. It does not matter what order these abilities go on the stack and resolve, Horobi's ability will destroy this creature even if the original targeted spell or ability is countered.
Q: Is it possible to Disrupting Shoal a 2 mana cost spell, splicing Dampen Thought onto it and then remove the same Dampen Thought from the game to pay Disrupting Shoal's alternative cost?
A: Yes, you can Splice a card's text onto a Shoal and then discard that Splice card to pay the alternate play cost of the Shoal. Keep in mind that you will still have to pay the Splice cost.
Q: If I have Toshiro Umezawa in play and a creature my opponent controls goes to the graveyard, can I play Glacial Ray from my hand and Splice a different Glacial Ray from my graveyard onto it?
A: No, you can only play the targeted card in your graveyard when Toshiro's ability resolves; you can not use it in other ways like to Splice it onto a card in hand. However, you can play the Glacial Ray in your graveyard and splice the Glacial Ray from your hand onto that one.
Q: My opponent has enchanted my Frostling with Heart of Light. He then attacks with two 2/1 creatures. Can I block one of them, put combat damage on the stack and sacrifice the Frostling to deal one point of damage to the other? If I do will both creatures be destroyed?
A: Yes that works. Heart of Light does not prevent the enchanted creature from assigning damage, it only prevents the damage when it would be dealt as long as the Heart of Light is in play. In this example the Heart of Light is not in play, so the Frostling will deal one point of damage to the creature targeted by its ability and one point of combat damage to the creature it blocked.
Q: Mana Breach and Isochron Scepter are in play. If I use the Scepter to make and play a copy of the Imprinted card, must I return a land to my hand?
A: Yes, you will have to return a land to your hand. Mana Breach's ability will trigger whenever you play any spell, regardless of whether it is a copy or represented by a card or what zone the spell is played from.
Q: Does Mana Maze stop Storm copies from going on the stack?
A: No, it only stops players from playing spells that share a color with the last spell that was played. It does not prevent copies form going on the stack.
Q: I have Equipoise in play. What happens if a creature has Protection from White? Equipoise targets permanents, so it can't phase out such a creature, right? But the most important thing is does such a creature enter into the totals (mine and target opponent's) used for comparison?
A: Equipoise's ability does not use the word target, which means it does not target. So permanents with Protection from White will be counted when calculating Equipoise's effect and they CAN be phased out.
