The Casual Forum Roundup, Week Ending 02/19/2005

Dan May

By Dan May
02/23/2005

Welcome to the weekly casual forum roundup, for 2/13-2/19. Your snappy introduction can be placed here.

Still Eating Breakfast
First off, I'd like to give kudos to Jyuan83, who has been getting some attention for his clever Peasant Cephalid Breakfast build. He's been posting some results, and getting feedback from Jchapsman. The discussion has expanded to sideboard material, and final tweaks that people make when trying to get a solid build better. If you didn't check it out last week, I won't hype it again - so check it out!

I Think I'll Go Eat Worms
Next up, I'd like to suggest people look into RPZip's WORMS! thread. He's set up a format called WORMS; how the title applies to his format, I don't know. (Sorry. I just pull the lever, folks; you gotta go through the door.) But RP's looking for some raw material for an article, and has already gotten some solid mono-colored decks. Can anyone support a two-color deck in his WORMS format? If nothing else, you could look at it as a great Sealed deck building exercise.

Craptastic!
Ryusei has issued a challenge as well: post a crap rare, watch him build a deck. It seems like he's having a lot of fun with this, and has already designed four decks from suggestions from other SCG forum members. Definitely for the more casual amongst us - but again, it's yet another exercise that might help get your mental facilities going.

Standard Stuff
May I suggest this creation for you Type 2 players out there?
21 Forest
4 Birds of Paradise
4 Sakura-Tribe Elder
4 Eternal Witness
3 Troll Ascetic
4 Molder Slug
2 Jugan, The Rising Star
2 Kodama of the North Tree
3 Tornado Elemental
2 Beacon of Creation
2 Commune With Nature
4 Kodama's Reach
2 Pulse of the Tangle
3 Rude Awakening

Sideboard:
1 Plains
4 Ghostly Prison
3 Wear Away
3 Oxidize
2 Naturalize
2 Viridian Shaman

The deck was designed by Metaljessie, and he's even included a brief
tournament report at the end of the thread, where he took first in a local event.

Ghostly Prison seems like such a strong card in his report that I'd think about reworking the deck to run the Prisons main, perhaps removing Pulse of the Tangle, Beacon of Creation, or Rude Awakening to sideboard status.

However, his initial concern was how to combat Death Cloud decks, and I'm not sure his current listing can take on the mighty black reset button. Metaljessie didn't face any DC decks at that tournament, so there's still a big question mark attached to this deck.

The Biggest Casual Error
At this point, I'd like to address the casual community at large. I see a lot of decks posted - or moved to - the casual forum. Usually, these decks are designed by new players, looking for some assistance with their cool ideas, and more power to them. They want to get better and use new ideas, and I'm proud to be part of a community that wants to help them.

But so many of them seem to fall into the same trap: Not enough land.

Solidninja with his Reanimator deck (done up for a T1 format), Berrybunches with a squirrel onslaught deck (Extended format), and zagiman6 and dearnhardt4ever8 with their respective Zubera builds (mostly kept in a block format), all have one thing in common: Their decks only run 20 lands.

Some of them think that cards like Land Grant, Kodama's Reach, or Wayfarer's Bauble will save them - but you need mana to cast and use those cards! (Well, okay, not Land Grant, but that doesn't mean your mana problems are solved if you're trying to cast Plated Slagwurm.)

One of the best guides to building decks that avoid mana screw has been published at this very site. Even if it's been awhile since you've read it, you should consider reading it again, and if you've never read it, then I'd say it's mandatory for the new player, even if you are playing casually.

No mana = no spells. And every time you can't cast a spell, you're giving your opponent the win. Remember, we might be casual deckbuilders, but that's no excuse for sloppy play or unfocused decks.

As a special note to the forum members mentioned in this section: I'm not trying to single you out on any personal level - you just happened to post decks this week that were land-light, like so many have before you. Your ideas are all worth merit, and what we want to do in the casual forums is help you execute those ideas successfully.

Spellbook Inspiration!
Finally, I'd like to thank SW4eternity for providing me with some inspiration. I've had a Recycle/Spellbook deck since Exodus, and the deck never really seemed to come together. With the deck he posted (although it doesn't run that combo), I have tweaked my deck, and I think I may be on to something here.

The Wretched
2 Wirewood Lodge
7 Forest
10 Island
4 Tropical Island
2 Overgrowth
1 Dawn's Reflection
2 Argothian Elder
3 Quirion Elves
1 Thorn Elemental
1 Harmonic Convergence
2 Elvish Fury
4 Recycle
4 Spellbook
1 Prosperity
3 Thieving Magpie
1 Frantic Search
2 Rewind
2 Morphling
2 Brainstorm
1 Time Spiral
2 Tidal Kraken
2 Arcane Denial
1 Hindering Touch

My goal in this deck is to get out a Tidal Kraken or Thorn Elemental, and then swing with them, boosting them repeatedly with Elvish Fury by generating a lot of mana via an enchanted land, Wirewood Lodge, and Argothian Elder. It's a little rough right now, but I hope to test it later this week.
