Rules Tip of the Day: Effects that affect creatures mean creatures in play, and not creature cards in any other zone. This also applies effects that deal with the other permanent types.
Q: If I attack with Arrogant Wurm and my opponent blocks with Goblin Cadet. Will I be able to assign trample damage to him?
A: Yes. Goblin Cadet's triggered ability will give you control of Goblin Cadet and remove them from combat before the combat damage step. Because Arrogant Wurm has Trample, when you go to assign combat damage you will be able to assign all of the Wurm's damage to the defending player.
Q: I have a question regarding Night of Soul's Betrayal and the Modular mechanic. Someone told me that if you have Night of Soul's Betrayal out and your opponent puts out an Arcbound Worker that they would not get to move the modular counter to another creature since it comes into play as a 0/0 or something like that. My question is, is that right that you would not get to move your modular counter if Night of Soul's Betrayal is on the board?
A: I assume that you are referring to only those Modular creatures that only come into play with a single counter. Anyway, what you were told is incorrect. While the Modular creature may come into play as a 0/0 creature that does not mean that the counter is not that or that the Modular ability does not trigger. If Night of Soul's Betrayal is in play, then the Modular creature will come into play, state-based effects are checked and it will go to the graveyard. This will cause the Modular ability to trigger and you can then choose an artifact creature target with that ability. A single +1/+1 counter will then be put on the targeted creature when this ability resolves.
Q: Will Tsabo’s Web keep City of Brass from untapping? How about a pain land like Adarkar Wastes?
A: Tsabo's Web will not keep a City of Brass from untapping. This is because the ability that deals a point of damage to the controller of City of Brass is a triggered ability, not an activated ability. It also will not keep a pain land from untapping. The damage dealt by those abilities is dealt by the mana ability, it is not separate from the mana ability of somehow make it a non-mana ability.
Q: Is there any reason why Island Sanctuary (if you opt to skip your draw phase) would prevent you searching your library for a basic land card during your Upkeep using the enchantment Elfhame Sanctuary?
A: No, you can still search for a land card when Elfhame Sanctuary's upkeep triggered ability resolves even though you were going to eventually skip the draw in your draw step anyway.
Q: I play Show and Tell and when it resolves I put Humility in play and my opponent puts Crusade in play. I know that if you play first Humility and later Crusade white creatures will get gain +1/+1, but with happens when both come into play at the same time due to Show and Tell?
A: As you are the active player you get to decide which of these two permanents will have the earlier timestamp. You can choose to have the bonus from Crusade be applied before Humility makes all creatures into 1/1s or visa-versa. So it is up to you whether white creatures are 1/1s or 2/2s.
Q: An opponent plays Wormfang Manta and enchants it with Cloak of
Invisibility
A: No. At the beginning of your opponent's next turn the Manta will phase out. This will cause the Manta’s leaves play ability to trigger and he will gain an extra turn. At the beginning of this extra turn the Manta will phase back into play, but when this turn is done you will take a turn. When it comes around to your opponent’s turn again the pattern will repeat and he will take two turns, then you one. This combo will net your opponent two turns for every one of yours but it does not allow him to take turn after turn without interruption.
Q: If I activate Stalking Stones and target it with Lose Hope, can I activate Stalking Stone’s ability again to make it a 3/3?
A: No that doesn't work, because of the way continuous effects interact. The animation effect of Stalking Stones is a type changing effect. All aspects of that effect (including setting the initial power and toughness of the animated permanent) are applied are applied before the power and toughness changing effect of Lose Hope. You can find out more the the details on how this works in section 418.5 of the comprehensive rules.
Q: I was playing online recently and I blocked a red creature with my Auriok Champion. Before combat damage resolved I played Test of Faith, hoping to make the Champion even bigger. However when combat damage was dealt, the damage from the attacking red creature was automatically prevented by the protection from red ability. Is this right?
A: No it is not; it sounds like you found a bug. Both the Test of Faith and the protection from red ability are trying to replace what happens when damage from this red source would be dealt. As the controller of the affected permanent you can choose which to apply first. You obviously intended to choose to have the Test of Faith prevent the damage and therefore get +1/+1 counters for your Champion.
