Rules Tip of the Day: There is only one official way to mulligan your initial opening hand in a game of Magic. If for any reason you do not like your starting hand, you can shuffle it back into your library and draw a new hand of one card less than before. You can repeat this process as many times as you like, each time drawing one cards less.
Q: When playing Ornate Kanzashi's ability, aside from paying the two mana, do you need to pay the mana cost of the card that's being used until the end of turn?
A: Yes, you will have to pay any costs associated with the card that is removed from the game if you play it. Ornate Kanzashi's effect does not allow you to play the revealed card for free.
Q: My opponent plays Tooth and Nail and uses mana from Boseiju to pay for it. I respond by paying Time Stop and then without passing priority I play Quash and target the Tooth and Nail. Will all copies of Tooth and Nail be removed from the game?
A: Yes that works. Quash will not counter the targeted Tooth and Nail, but it will allow you to search for other copies of the card in its controllers hand, library and graveyard and remove them from the game. Then when Time Stop resolves, the Tooth and Nail on the stack will not be countered, but it will be removed from the game and therefore not resolve, as the turn will end.
Q: If I copy my opponent’s Tooth and Nail with Uyo, Silent Prophet’s ability can I counter their Tooth and Nail or do I have to wait for their spell to resolve to activate Uyo?
A: You can copy a spell and then counter the original. In fact if you wait for the original to resolve, then it will be too late to make a copy as spells and abilities that copy spells can only copy spells that are currently on the stack.
Q: When a ninja comes into play via and Ninjutsu ability, does it have Haste? For example, if after combat I were to untap it somehow and equip it with Shuriken, can I tap the ninja to use the Shuriken ability?
A: No. While the Ninja that comes into play when you use ninjutsu may be attacking, that does not mean it has haste. In order to tap the ninja to pay of for the Shriuken ability you would have to had controlled the ninja since the beginning of your most recent turn.
Q: I have both Cuombajj Witches and Mephidross Vampire in play. I tap the witches and deal 1 damage to one of my opponent creatures, and he chooses to deal one damage to one of my creatures. Do the witches gain two or only one +1/+1 counter from Mephidross Vampire's triggered ability?
A: They will get two +1/+1 counters. The Witches ability deals one point of damage twice, so the ability granted by Mephidross Vampire will trigger twice.
Q: With Yawgmoth's Will active during my turn, may I reveal my hand to play Land Grant in my graveyard?
A: Yes, due to Yawgmoth's Will you can play Land Grant from your graveyard by using the alternate play method of revealing a landless hand.
Q: With Nantuko Cultivator may I discard the lands drawn with his ability? For example if I discard 3 lands and draw other 2 lands, may i discard the 2 new lands and draw 2 new?
A: No. When Nantuko Cultivator's comes into play triggered resolves you are given the option of discarding any number of lands cards. After you do this you put +1/+1 counters equal to the number of discarded cards on the Cultivator and then draw that many cards. By the time you draw these cards it is too late to discard any more cards. This is not a process that repeats itself.
Q: If I play Energy Tap on Scornful Egotist, what type of mana goes into my mana pool? Do I get 8 colorless, 1 Blue and 7 Colorless, or 8 Blue?
A: You will get 8 colorless mana, as Energy Tap does not specify a color for the mana it generates. The mana cost of the Egotists may be 7U, but the converted mana cost of the Egotist is 8 and that is what Energy Tap looks as then calculating how much mana to generarte.
Q: Is it legal to play with all foiled lands? Example: the only lands you have are basic and foil and you have no other foil cards in your deck. Or, you have all foil basic lands, some non-foil non basic lands and no other foil cards. Are either of those examples legal?
A: There are no official rules that govern what can and can not be foil in a deck. HOWEVER, keep in mind that if you play with foils in any pattern that you could unintentionally mark your deck. Older foils had the tendency to warp, and could be easier to recognize when looking at the back of them. If all of a certain card or card type are foiled and easily recognizable from the back then you could receive a penalty for having marked cards or even disqualified if it is suspected that you are cheating.
